I'm going to transfer from Community College to UC in Fall 2010 and I'm planning to take summer courses at UC once I get admitted. But, the problem is I do not have money to afford the summer courses unless I can disburse financial aid in the next academic year within summer. is it possible to get financial aid in summer? and what should I do besides applying FAFSA?

It is possible to get summer aid. Whether you are eligible depends on your individual circumstances and the school policies.

Schools either have summer as part of the preceding year (so summer 2010 would be part of the 2009-2010 school year) or part of the following year (so summer 2010 would then be part of the 2010-2011 school year). They can’t do both - they have to have chosen one way or the other. You would have to check with your school what year their summer aid is part of.

If their summer is part of the preceding year then 2010 summer would be part of the 2009-2010 school year. They can’t disburse 2010-2011 aid to you in 2009-2010 school year. You would have to check with them whether you can apply for 2009-2010 aid for the summer if you have any aid 2009-2010 eligibility left. That would depend on what aid you have had at your current school. For instance if you already had the maximum Stafford loan for the year then you can’t borrow more for the 2009-2010 school year. There is summer Pell available from this school year so if you are Pell eligible you may be able to get that. I don’t know how the rules work - it is very new.

If their summer is part of the following year then it would be part of the 2010-2011 school year. So they may be able to give you part of the aid in the summer. But it might reduce your aid in the regular school year.

Short answer - ask the school if they do summer aid and if you would be eligible for it.

Yes, eligibility for summer 2010 will be determined on fafsa efc for 2010-2011 school year. UCs use the fafsa efc for calculations, but…for summer aid, the calculations are different. Some people who would qualify for aid during the year get nothing in the summer, or only get work study. You have to do a separate fin aid app in spring, and then you’ll be notified for summer aid in a separate award.

My daughter’s school does not do summer WS, which was a shame as she had been working a lab job she liked. Last year she got a Stafford loan in the summer because she had not maxed out her Stafford already. To our surprise she got a SEOG grant which was a pleasant surprise - they must have had some SEOG $$$$s left. This year the rules for Pell allow for additional Pell in the summer for the 1st time. It is new so hopefully the schools have all the rules figured out.

Talk to your school. As theocmom said - there is usually an additional application for summer aid. It was not additional FAFSA but some form filling through the school.

My UC DD kept her WS job year round, not sure how they did it as she usually was not on campus nor did she apply for summer aid. She did work online for the campus job all summer. She never hit her WS maximum during the school year, so I think they just carried that forward or backward.
