Hi. I am 25 years male student trying to transfer from Oakland Community College to University of Michigan, ann arbor. I was actually doing some business of my own after high school graduation and recently decided to go back to college and finish it before I get any older. I just started my semester at OCC and taking some basic requirement class but I really do wanna transfer to U of M, ann arbor location and graduate from there. I am planning to stay here at OCC for an year or two and then transfer. I have currently 3.8 gpa here at OCC now and had about 3.2 gpa from troy high school that I graduated from long ago. I don't remember my SAT score but it wasn't really good when I took it 8 years ago. I wanna major computer science. What class do I need and how much gpa score do I need to transfer? Do I have to take enterance exam or some kind of other tests to get in U of M? I also heard you can only transfer b4 beginning of fall semester and attend orientation. Is this true? I need as much info as I possibly can. Thanks. :)

First of all, make Google your new best friend.

This would be a good starting point - [University of Michigan Community College Transfer Portal](http://commcoll.umich.edu/)

Your best bet is doing the first 2 years at OCC and obtaining your associates. I transferred from OCC after 2 years with a 3.9 GPA. I did not take the SAT’s or ACT’s either. I’m not sure what you mean about only being able to transfer before the fall semester–I transferred to UM in the winter semester–I think you’re required to attend orientation.
Keep your GPA up, get your associates degree and you shouldn’t have any problems getting in. Good luck!

thx for replies. I think I can get association degree in 1.5 years if I do all 4 semesters without taking break. 12 credits per semester = 48 or so per year so I should be able to get 60-70 credits… I am not sure if this is true but people were saying I only need 3.0 to transfer from OCC to U of M. I definitely aim for all A but not so sure if I can keep that up for long. Probably 3.5+ is more likely realistic gpa for me by the time I get my association degree. How’s U of M though? Is it a lot harder than OCC? If you were getting 3.9 in OCC, what are youo getting in U of M? People are keep telling me OCC is easy and even if I can get all A in OCC, I won’t even get B in U of M. Is this true?

I honestly doubt that a 3.0 from OCC is going to get you in… I hope I’m not wrong.

I was kinda in the same boat as you though… I went for music for 2 years then switched to accounting and applied for Mich (from HFCC). Try joining Phi Theta Kappa (I guess U of M likes it) and maybe your school’s honors program, maybe try to get involved in student clubs too.

I had a 3.7 before I switched to accounting and took school seriously, then I got a 4.0 for the next year. Getting in from HFCC was way easier than I think it would have been to get in from my high school. (never tried)

It’s possible. I have a friend who transferred from EMU and struggled to beat the exam averages, he gets like C+'s even though he tries pretty hard.
It’s a different ball game bro.
keep your gpa up, 3.5 is risky.
3.0? don’t even apply.

Hi, I hate to make a reply on an old thread, but can someone explain to me why you would spend the extra time pursuing an associate’s? I am trying to transfer into UM-AA CoE and was simply planning on finishing all of the required prerequisites and applying.
Well, I think if you complete an AA you can transfer a few extra credits (not sure, look it up). And then, if you for some reason you don’t complete your bachelors, you at least have an associates.
Thanks for the reply.
That’s what I was expecting it to be, it just seemed like emilz implied it to be mandatory. I don’t see any other credits that would transfer as far as their engineering program goes besides the standard prerequisites.
Can you comment on my current stats and potential probability?
I have a 3.83 GPA
I am applying for Phi Theta Kappa
I have 6 months of work experience at an engineering firm
Thank you for all of your help.
I’m not an expert on these but I think your chances look good.
