Transfer from SUNY Albany

Hello everyone!

So I joined this forum specifically for this question.

How hard would it be to transfer to these schools?

Syracuse University
Butler University
Northeastern University
George Washington University
University of San Diego
Tulane University
Indiana University at Bloomington

My credentials are:

Current University: SUNY Albany
HS GPA: around an 82/100
SAT: 1150/1600 1610/2400. (the writing part destroyed me)
College GPA: 3.12 ( 3 B+'s, 1 B, 1 B-)

Take into account that my essays are actually amazing, at least in my opinion and the opinion of my peers.

I'll gladly provide more information at your request.

So, let me reiterate my opening question: How hard would it be to transfer to these schools?

Also, I’ve worked at three big companies. Ranging from pharmaceutical marketing, sales marketing, and real estate. My resume is pretty solid. Definitely have a lot more corporate experience than most of the people I know. Since I’m from NYC, I’m exposed to all of that, and so are my friends, but I think I definitely took more advantage of it.

Very hard if you have only completed one semester of college. You need to have at least 30+ credits in order for colleges to not weigh your SAT scores and HS record very much.

Once you have 30+ credits then I would say your chances are pretty good assuming also that you have above a 3.12 GPA.

I believe GWU require SAT scores for transfer students so you might want to retake the SAT if you are planning on applying there.

Thanks for the insight, bottlecap1990!

Most of my schools aren’t even asking for High School transcripts (except for Syracuse, Indiana, and I thinK GWU.) All they want are mid-term reports, and I’m sure I am going to do A LOT better this semester. Not trying to make any excuses, but I did slack off my first semester because College was new and exciting to me, but I’m definitely going to try and raise that GPA to (hopefully) a 3.4+.

How much of a difference can an essay have?? Substantial enough that they look into more than just your grades?

Also, are recommendation letters from employers OK? I don’t really know my professors too well, and I think asking them now might be a bit late, unless I ask my current professors (whose classes don’t start for another week).

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!

A good essay can certainly help but your grades are more important. I wouldn’t bother getting a letter from an employer or a professor unless it is required. Just try to keep your GPA as high as possible and take into consideration the cost of attending those universities you listed :)

Added DePaul/Bentley and took out GWU. Chance me PLEASE and I’ll chance you back <3

Great chance for depaul. A bit tough for Bentley.

Thanks again bottlecap!

Can anyone else chance me, please?? I’ll chance back!!

Northeastern, Tulane, and GWU are tough. Others vary but not that hard. you should’ve killed your first semester to have a better shot since you’re sending those grades when transferring.

Yeah, those are just like reach schools for me. I’m hoping for a good midterm report grade because that could definitely make or break my status to Northeastern.

Any other input?

More input would be greatly appreciated!

bumpitybump

Can I have more input, please?

Wow, you were looking at a few of the schools I am hoping to transfer too. And yeah SAT killed me too…!

I am currently at Syracuse University, and I am hoping to transfer to Northeastern. For Northeastern, mid term reports can replace your high school stats, so kick ass this semester! That is what I am trying to do.

I say you have a pretty good shot with Syracuse, and depaul. On Collegeboard, the stats for Syracuse transfer are: Applied: 1,113 Admitted: 657. Put down somewhere that you are interested in SU Abroad and has heard it is one of the best study abroad programs in the country (even though it may not be and you might not study abroad anyways). They will love to hear that. I am not too familiar with the other schools though, so I cant really say much about that. I am not sure about this, but I remember seeing that you need 24 credits completed before applying to U of San diego. Double check though.

I like Syracuse, but i wish it was in a bigger city! The size of the city is a bit depressing and I am really looking to get out! But if you’re into that, then by all means, Syracuse University is a great school.

GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, I’m definitely trying to do really well on my midterm report (preferably 3.6+)! That would be ideal for me.

Do you know when Syracuse sends out their decisions for transfers??

Thanks man, good luck to you as well! Hopefully we both end up at NEU next semester!!

Any other suggestions/opinions?

I agree that you should try to improve you SAT score (especially for Tulane and George Washington). It can only help.

Yeah, you’re right. I actually decided against transferring to Tulane and GWU. My FINAL list is this.

Please chance

1 school - Northeastern

2 school - DePaul University

3 school - University of San Diego (different from UCSD and SDSU)

4 school - Indiana University at Bloomington

5 school - Syracuse University

6 school - Butler University

possibly still adding:

7 school - UMass Amherst

8 school - University of Miami

9 school - definitely adding another business school in California. Can anyone name some decent ones? I realize I won’t get into UCB Haas, so anything attainable would be great!

once again, here are my credentials

Current University: SUNY Albany
HS GPA: around an 83/100
SAT: 1150/1600, 1610/2400. (the writing part destroyed me)
College GPA: 3.12 ( 3 B+'s {Psychology, business law, philosophy}, 1 B {Exploring Oceans}, 1 B- {micro})

Mid-term grades (as of now):
Macro: Average: ~94 (A)
Statistics: Average: 100 (A)
Analytical Writing: 100 (A)
Sociology: No real basis, except I’ve got 100% attendance and completed extra credit work.
Computer Apps in Business: No Basis at all
First tests for all classes start around next week, my latest first exam will be at the end of Feb
averages based off of homeworks and quizzes, and although it’s not as heavily weighed as tests, it still counts
Hoping I do really well this semester; 3.7+ would be ideal

ECs:

100+ hours of Community Service
Young Professionals Mentoring Program
Internship at Millennium Realty Group Ltd.
Internship at Vector Marketing
Internship at The Falk Group
Work-Study at my current school

Please provide me with some insight.

Get to know your current professors. Transfer schools require professor recommendations, not employer recommendations.

Essays count but they will not compensate for GPA, professor recommendations, or SAT/ACT scores. Your chances at more selective transfer colleges will increase if you have 30 credits of college courses completed with a solid GPA. So, if you get rejected from your top choices, stay where you are and try again after you’ve completed more credits.

My Business Law professor is writing my recommendation letter, and, if a second letter is needed, my micro professor is willing to write me one as well.

I agree, if none of my top schools accept me, I might spend another year at my current institution rather than going to a new school with an intent to transfer.
