Transfer from UCSD to Cal?

Hey everyone,

I have a huge dilemma on my hands. I have gotten into UC Berkeley's College of Letters and Sciences as a transfer from UCSD. I am doubling in biology and econ at UCSD (I'm still torn between medicine and business for my career path).

Here is the problem: I wanted to major in econ at berkeley, but my courses do not transfer correctly and I have to take a bunch of pre-req's at Cal. This is a problem because you need to finish your pre-reqs by your first semester at Cal in order to get into the major, and that is pretty much impossible for me to do, especially seeing that most of the classes I need to take are completely waitlisted. The same goes for both the molecular/cell biology major and integrative biology major at Cal. My only options are the Environmental Economics major, or statistics.

I don't know if it's worth giving up a double major in biology and economics at UCSD for an environmental economics major at Cal. I don't even know exactly what the environmental econ major at cal will lead to.

Also, I'd like to know how much of an edge Cal's reputation will give to someone in comparison to UCSD's reputation.

I'd love to hear from everyone regarding what I should do, especially those with knowledge of the environmental economics major at Cal.

Thanks and sorry for the essay!

As a total fan of Cal and not so much of UCSD (for non-academic reasons), I would suggest staying at UCSD and doing the double major there. It's a solid, solid institution, and if you are doing well there, keep doing well. Don't underestimate the amount of time and hassle you will have by switching.

Unless that is, you convince yourself that environmental economics is something you truly want to major in.

If you go into Medicine, you have to go to Medical school. Nobody will care where you went for undergraduate.
If you go into business, you will mostly likely get an MBA. People will care little where you did your undergraduate.

Unless you hate the atmosphere at UCSD and find yourself unhappy there, I agree with Bedhead in that it makes the most sense to stay.

Agree with the posters above. Berkeley's great, but UCSD is very solid as well. As long as you're doing well and you're happy, I'd recommend staying at SD.
