I’m currently a high school IB senior. My grades throughout high school were crappy but my SAT was 1500 and my anticipated IB scores are pretty high. I’m planning on either going to UMASS Boston or the University of New England to study pre-med and then transfer after my first year.
The school I’d like to attend in the UK is Plymouth University. Is there any chance I could apply during my first year of college and then go there my sophomore year? Is a transfer of this kind even possible? My other choice is probably NEU or BC (even though their transfer rate is ridiculously low). Thanks.
Possibly, depending on what you want to study. Technically speaking, you wouldn’t b transferring, as course credit is unlikely to be transferable - you would have to apply to start as a first year student again, but the year you have completed at the US university should be regarded as enough to show you are qualified for the course.
However, UK universities aren’t necessarily the best foundation if you wish to go on to medical school in the US. Or were you thinking of applying for the Plymouth medicine degree? If so, and your IB grades are high enough, then maybe a gap year next year might be better than studying in the US, to allow you to get some suitable volunterring or work experience to make your application more competitive, and to save some money.
Yes, I know applying to American medical schools while being at a UK university in a med program really isn’t the best option. However, I’m being forced to do my first year at an American university. I have 4 years of experience working at several doctor’s offices and clinical labs as well. I am definitely thinking of applying to Plymouth for their medicine degree, as I would stay there afterward most likely.
Thank you for the response! Bump!
What citizenship do you have?
BTW, if you you want to go to an American med school, getting a UK undergrad degree really doesn’t make sense. You can also study-abroad from an American college.
I’m American. I suppose, just trying to weigh my options. Thank you.
Well, there’s no way a first year of gen eds in the US would count towards the first year of a UK medicine degree, so you would have to start over in the first year; but you could certainly apply while attending a US university. It might be helpful if your academic reference came from a chemistry or biology prof there.
Why are you forced to attend a US university for freshman year?
UK universities still accept applications from US citizens. Use the CommonApp.
Why Plymouth and for what ‘course’, though?
Do you currently live in the UK as an American citizen?
Do you have European or British citizenship?
