When you apply to a new school as a transfer student. How do you calculate your GPA? I transferred twice to different state colleges. So my GPA from Valencia, Seminole. State college. How do the schools calculate your GPA? Do they take your GPA from the last college or average all of them?
When I transferred in the mid 90’s every school would start my gpa over and only report a gpa based on classes taken at that school. The credits transferred in as if I had taken them pass/fail and had no bearing on gpa though the credits could be used to fulfill graduation requirements. This is why most schools require a minimum number of credits to be taken at the school itself before they will grant a degree.
You report gpas for each school as they are listed on the transcript for each school.
Right, but what if one school is a 2.0, the next a 2.5 and the last a 3.0. How would they calculate my final GPA?
They calculate it solely based on your performance at their institution.
So if you had straight A’s at community college they report a 4.0, then transferred into a university and had straight B’s your final gpa would be 3.0 because the university only reports a gpa based on classes you took there.
The only exception to that would be if you took classes at a branch of the university itself and made a transfer of locations within the same university. So if you took classes at a branch of OSU (which is part of the university and follows same calendars, curriculum, email system, same professional standards etc) and had a 4.0 for half the classes, switched the location of where you took the classes (started taking the classes at main campus in Columbus instead) and had a 3.0 for the last two years, then you would end up with a 3.5 but, again, that is because all the classes would have been taken at the same school.
Your final gpa is reported by the institution that grants your degree based only on the classes taken there.
