I am a Grade 12 student planning to graduate in a few months. I am planning to transfer to one of the UC campuses for second year of my university. However I have heard that in order to transfer I may need to complete minimally 60 semester units, which take about 2 years or 4 semesters to complete. Is there another method of transfer in which I can become eligible for transfer application in this upcoming fall? In other words, is there a way I can transfer for second year in a UC campus instead of third year?

By the way i’m Canadian student so I will be applying as an international transfer

I don’t think any of the UCs are accepting sophomore transfers right now. You’re expected to complete 60+ units before you transfer, and you should aim to complete all of your major’s lower division pre-reqs (assist.org should give you an idea of what to take). And you need to keep your GPA pretty high, so I wouldn’t suggest trying to cram two years of courses into one.

Also, make sure you’ll be able to afford it! Unless you’re a California resident, UC is really expensive.

Do you mean that if I apply lower division transfer I may be able to apply as a first year student from a canadian college and attend second year in UC if I get accepted?

If you finish the 60+ units, yes. But 60 units in two to three semesters is overkill man. I’d say it’d just be easier to do the two years first and then apply.

Don’t even try to do it in one year. You will kill your gpa. Just be patient. If you’re really really set on going to a UC, move here and go to community college for 2 years before.

Preparing for 2 years means staying in a college for the first and second year and transfer there for the third year? I get confused cuz you know how you need to apply on nov 30th early in the year. Do i apply in the november of my second year study or after the second year, which is my third year, of my study?

Am i expected to have already completed the 60 credits or am i allowed to apply as i am in my way to completing the 60 credits before my enrolment?

You apply at the beginning of your second school year. Then you find out if you’re accepted at the end of the school year, and begin at your new university the third year.

Very big thank to all of you. That’s very helpful!

How should I prepare for my transfer? If I’m still not sure about what I will be majoring in, what courses should I take for my first 2 years? I will be going to a business school (SFU Beedie in vancouver) or possibly UBC Arts. So i will possibly be majoring in Business in a UC.

You don’t have to complete the 60 units by the time you apply. Just by the time you actually transfer.

Since you are out of state and international, I really don’t know what classes you should take. It’s hard to say. I don’t know if you should build your schedule around getting into a UC, because then if you don’t, you have all these worthless classes. You have to ask yourself, how bad do you want to go to a UC? If it’s really a lot, then you have to consider moving to CA and going to community college beforehand, because that’s the best path to UC. If you don’t want to do this, then you really should talk to a counselor about what classes you should take. You can get an idea of the classes they will be looking for by going to assist.org, even though this is really intended for California community college students. Good luck!
