I am a girl transferring from the University of Arizona. My current major is Biochemistry but I am trying to change it to Chemical Engineering. I was not your average 4.0 student in high school, nor did I take a ton of AP classes. Do you think I have a chance transferring for the spring semester? How picky are they about their transfer students? Super nervous.
What’s your current GPA?
What classes have you taken so far?
CSM has an AMAZING Chemical Engineering program. I’m glad you’re considering this as a career, and I really hope it works out!
My advice to you is to get into contact with the admissions office, and make sure all of your documents are sent in ASAP. Follow up with them constantly and MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Make sure you’ve met there minimum requirments, and SHOW INTEREST, SHOW INTEREST, SHOW INTEREST. I can’t reiterate this enough. Make sure that you show the admissions commitee that you want to attend Mines by making sure your application is complete, calling in, emailing the admissions staff, and following up on your application. Trust me, this will go a very long way.
If you do this, your chances will go up exponentially (I did this and was accepted to Mines, despite being under the average).
The only reason I couldn’t attend was affordability - CSM is really expensive for out of state students, but if you can afford it (without loans)- go for it…
Hi I will be applying to CSM for the fall semester and I have a couple of questions for you. I have been contacting them for awhile now and I tried to get into the spring semester but I didn’t get in because my GPA was kinda low and I did not fulfill all the requirements. I will be completing their core requirements before the start of the fall semester. I got a D in my calc II last semester (because I failed one of the tests) and I will definitely retake the class this semester. This brought my GPA way down. I got a really good score for my final though… do you think they won’t accept me because of this? I’m planning to write personal essay and wait until I take my first calc II exam of the semester and upload it with my other documents in the application to really show them that I will get a better grade this semester… do you think this will help? Otherwise I got As and Bs in my other core classes… PLEASE HELP ME THANK YOU! Also my brother is currently attending Mines… I don’t know if that helps at all… also I’m an instate student.
@Sbsr What is your major? Where did you take the Calculus 2 class? If it was Front Range Community College then you are in some amount of trouble. FRCC Calculus 2 is much easier than Mines Calculus 2.
A grade of D in calculus 2 is probably a deal breaker to get admitted to Mines. Mines requires a math and science core for any major, even economics or social sciences. The reason that D is not good, is that all engineering courses build on calculus if you cannot get a B in Calculus 2, you may not pass calculus 3 . differential equations may be even more challenging. You may struggle with the math in many majors like electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering.
However, do not give up on your dream of becoming an engineer, if you can take the class again, CU Boulder College of Engineering may still take you. Also apply to Mines and see what happens, its possible you can get in. CU Engineering has a bit lower standards for GPA than Mines, especially if you are a girl, they want more women in their program. Please do not feel insulted by this statement. Just try your best. Also look at Colorado State University, which is in between for standards. You can also consider CU Boulder Arts and Sciences and a computer science major. Many students with weaker math skills go this route. You can also get tutoring and improve your math skills. Good luck.
