Transfer Help

Hello everyone,

This is my third thread on CC. I need some advice on how to transfer in to a university. This advice is however for a nephew of mine, who refuses to make an account because he is stuck up with studies.

He is currently attending a 4 year university in Minnesota (which I might add is not so highly ranked).

Although he has had a very low High school performance, his performance in his university has been very good. His stats are as follows :-

University info:-

4 year university

ABET accredited

Current course- Mechanical Engineering

High school:-

3.0 GPA

SAT - 620 M , 480 CR --> Taken in HS

Current performance:-

3.9 GPA

Currently a Sophomore (he plans to transfer as a Junior)

Dean's list

Offered instate tuition fee and many other scholarships (he is practically attending the university for free)

Top 1%

Core Curriculum

Research work with professors

Learned to play Football and Lacrosse (he is also on the respective teams)

Has excellent LOR's

Current List:-

University of Minnesota - Twin cities (safety)

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

University of Wisconsin

University of California - LA

University of California - Berkeley

Cornell University

Northwestern University

Dartmouth college

What do you think will his chances be with his current statistics ?. Which all universities do you think he will be able to get into?. Also, what can he do to improve his chances ?.

He is not a recruitable athlete

He doesn't require any financial aid

E.C's - Student government and 50 hrs of community service. Internship of 2.5 months at Johnson & Johnson.

Which schools do not look at test scores while transferring ? (in general)

Also, Which schools from the above list do not care much about the SAT's ?

He is especially interested in Cornell university (he visited once and liked the place a lot)

I just wanted to know whether Test scores (SAT and SAT II) are considered important factors while transferring to a university to start as a Junior ? or should he just send in the scores which he received in HS ?.

He is not a URM

He does not need aid

All his credits are transferable to the UC's and the rest of the universities

Thank you

From my perspective, Berkeley and Michigan is immediately a not sure. Regard to Cornell, I don’t really know because I am also applying to that school but to its, industrial realtion, IRS, school.

only some of the schools in that list require the SAT, so he might want to retake the SAT for the schools like Cornell, Dartmouth and Northwestern. But the other schools will pretty much only look at his GPA, curriculum, personal statements etc…

I don’t about that… First off he has very respectable stats and will transfer into a great school assuming he doesn’t mess up or anything comes his way. But I really do believe that he could get into UCLA and UCB… he has great stats and he’ll pay the extra out of state fee which would def help out the broke UC system.

I don’t understand why he would need to retake the SAT’s though… As a transfer student I don’t even think he needs to send in his high school transcript (I could be wrong).

Tell your nephew to keep on keeping, he’ll get into a great school with those grades and EC’s.

^HS transcript is only for if he hasn’t taken Spanish or something in college but did in HS (I took it in college too but failed cause I misread that the course wasn’t an at-your-own-pace course, aiming for an academic renewal to remove it and use the HS grades, if not I’ll just retake it in college ace it and save my butt the trouble). Anyways, UC’s will require it, State colleges might not, UC’s don’t need the SATs but some of the higher ones might

Hi EasternDad - I’m the parent of an incoming UCLA transfer student - my son attended a local Calif. Comm. College. Suggest you check out the links below regarding the UCLA and UCB transfer requirements. Also note the profile of admitted students. About 18% from out of State for UCB for Fall 2010, compared to only about 10% for UCLA. But as pointed out above, UCs like the out-of-state students more and more since it means more $$$. Good luck to your newphew!

Thank you all.

I just had one more question. His HS is in Europe (Germany), and he has one original copy of his transcripts with him. So will the university ask for the transcripts to be sent directly from the HS (which does not look possible to me as it is very backward and when my son had to send his transcripts, I went to the HS - got the transcripts sealed - then sent it from DHL). So what should he do ?
