Hi, decided to repost this here after no help in the transfer forum.

Right now I'm a sophomore at Ohio State University (I know, I know, irony right?) studying political science. I'm looking to transfer to UMich either for fall or winter of 2011 (my junior year). I was interested in UMich in high school, but didn't finish my app because I didn't think I had a shot (stupid, I know). Anyway, I realized it's time to pursue what I really wanna do. However, I wanted to get an idea of how realistic my goals are. Here's some info:

Now, I know one can't assume they will do well for an entire year, but for the sake of this topic, let's assume at the end of this year I have around a 3.6-3.7 GPA here at OSU. Would I have a realistic shot at transferring? My major is political science by the way, so I would be in the LSA college.

My final question involves their calculation of GPA. Here at OSU, we have "freshman forgiveness", which allows a freshman student to repeat a course he/she earns a D or lower in, and only counts the higher grade into the GPA. My first quarter at school I failed my math course, but made it up spring quarter with a C. Now, the C is the only grade factorted into my GPA. Will UMich calculate both grades when looking at my GPA, effectively lowering it from what OSU considers to be my GPA? Also, would this keep me from being admitted?

Sorry for the novel, I just have a lot of questions. Thanks for reading.

In theory you would, yes, those would be decent stats for a transfer student. Not a shoe-in by any stretch of the imagination, but you’d have a shot. You would have a better chance with that gpa after two years, though, as your 3.4 and 28 are still going to carry a fair amount of weight with only one year of college under your belt.

I don’t know about the grade calculation, that would be a good question to ask admissions.

I hope you get in. I am in the umich poli sci program and I like it a lot.

You have a chance if you do extremely well on your essays. What have you done EC-wise during college? At the junior level, your high school record is not as significant as your college record (though it is still considered). (also note that the Winter 2011 term starts this coming January, not Jan 2012).

The University of Michigan has discontinued the practice of recalculating GPA. But be advised that admissions readers do look at individual grades and you would do well to explain the failing grade when you apply. However, the one F is not, in and of itself, an automatic basis for a denial of admission.

I believe the only recalculation that UM does still have in place is that the GPA’s from Ohio State students applying to UM are multiplied by a factor of 0.87…so if you had a GPA of 3.7 from OSU, that would recalculate into a UM GPA of 3.21 for admission purposes. Why? Because its Ohio State.

thanks for the help. yes, to clarify this would be applying to start junior year at UMich. as far as EC’s go, I’ve done Americorps and am in a few clubs.

In that case, depending on how they look at that bad grade, I’d say you’re in pretty good shape. Have back up plans in mind, because you never know, but I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over your chances. You need to actually get those grades you mentioned, though.
