I will be transferring in as a third year from Northern Virginia Community College (so this is my first dorm experience), and I'm trying to figure out which housing would be the best for my transition. Judging by the stuff I've read on UVA's website, they seem to be pushing Johnson/Weedon/Malone as the best option for transfers since it has a mix of upperclassmen and new transfers, but most of the student reviews I've read online (here and else where) seem to hate on those dorms for some reason.

I'm torn between wanting to live in that "transfer community", and Lambeth or Bice, since those two are both apartment style and located closer to the main Grounds. Is it easier to meet people and socialize in the traditional two bed dorm style buildings versus the apartment style ones? I'm hoping for a setting were socializing and doing stuff is frequent, because I'm introverted and would easily be tempted to sit by myself all day. Also, I don't really know much about the dining options, just that Johnson/Weedon/Malone is close to two of the dining halls.

Any experiences, opinions, or advice that you can provide would be great.

Easier to meet people in traditional dorm style I would say, unless you really click with your roommates. Upperclassman housing is a mixed bag because for the most part people already have friends and their own stuff going on, so they’re not necessarily making as much of an effort to meet new people and stuff as first years would be.

That being said, you should either live in Lambeth, Bice or Brown College. Otherwise, live off-Grounds. Faulkner, Copeley, JMW, and Hereford are all too far away to be worth it really. You can find cheaper off-Grounds housing closer to your classes.

It won’t necessarily improve your socializing with housemates situation, but at least you’ll be in a better location and won’t have to take the bus to get anywhere. Trust me, it gets old fast. As a transfer that lives in one of these places, I regret it. Haven’t met one person I would consider hanging out with through my dorm, and the location is just a pain in the butt.

Look into Brown. Very insular community, and if you’re similar to the “stereotypical” Brownie you’ll like it a lot. Otherwise, it’s Lambeth, Bice, or off Grounds.

I’m not sure if your still looking, but If interested, I am currently looking for a replacement to take over my Lambeth contract. I believe lambeth allows for the best experience for a transfer student to make the best transition with the rest of the student body based on the opening-ness of the Lambeth community. The interaction of this apartment style dorm allows you to integrate nicely with the rising undergrads who will be your neighbors. It allows you the independence of an apartment and the community of on-grounds living. Also it is great location in proximity to the Barracks shopping center and Rugby Road to further your embrace of the social setting.

If you are interested in taking over my Lambeth contract, do let me know. Email me at: gaturnerii@gmail. com
