Transfer into Business major, help!

Hi guys, I've been a lurker here for a while, but this is my first post. I'm coming out of my first year of community college in southern California and planning on applying this Fall (2012) to go to school in the Fall of 2013, as a business marketing or administration major. As it stands, I'll have the first two years of English done, and the vast majority of my GE done. I'm planning on taking almost entirely business and accounting classes over the course of this summer and next year, I've got about a 3.6 or 3.7 GPA, I'm highly involved on campus as the Vice President of our Interclub Council in the associated student government, and I'm running for Vice President of Senate for the whole student government. I passed 9 of 9 AP tests in high school, graduated with a 4.56 in the top 1% of my class with a 2070 SAT score, but generally got shafted last year during admissions, so I'm hoping my second time around won't be as brutal.

My real question here is: "What caliber of schools (hopefully with some examples) should I see as reasonable to apply to?" Ideally I would love to go to Cornell, NYU, or Carnegie Mellon, but those schools are all out my reach I'd imagine because I don't qualify for the requisite courses I need to have complete. I am certain that I will apply to USC and a few cal poly schools, but I would love some opinions on good business schools out of state, because my research hasn't really given me many testimonials on admissions or actual experience with other schools. The only two out of state schools I know much about currently are Pitt and Drexel and plan to apply to both.

Thanks in advance for all help, advice, and information!

Much of it will depend on how much your family can afford. What would that number be?

Last year, Drexel offered a chunk of the total cost, dropping it from around 55k to 30k, and that was quite a lot to ask from my parents. Odds are I will be taking out some form of loans and also getting support from them in the ballpark of (my best guess) somewhere from 10-20k a year.

When you say last year do you mean before you started at your CC? If so you may not get the same offer from Drexel as a transfer student.

If your arents can only pay up to $20K, unless you qualify for a lot of need based aid, your best bet is to stay in the California system. Haas is worth a try.

Yeah it was before starting at my CC, so I’ll be reapplying this year. While my parents could contribute about that much, I am still completely willing to work with student loans to help pay for the university that I get into, I’m just having a hard time finding any that are possible to transfer into as a business major, especially outside of California. So far in California I’m planning on applying to Berkeley, USC, and Cal Poly Pomona as a safety school.

Bumping! Thanks again

Bumping once more

If you talk to your advisor, he/she may let you take the courses you don’t qualify for. I needed to take Calculus to go to NYU, but I had to go through Pre-Calc first. I talked to my advisor, she let me take Calc, and I got an A+ in the class. If you’re confident in yourself, give it a shot.
