transfer into engineering, possible?

I just applied to Cal and I chose L&S. I think I might have changed my mind.
How hard will it be to transfer into EE, let's say after the first quarter/semester?
What kind of requirements I will have to fulfill my first semester there?
Thank you.

Cal is on the semester system, not quarters.

While it is possible to transfer, it is pretty difficult. I think you will need to take the engineering track courses and achieve a very high GPA before being allowed to switch. Might take a year or more before you could build the case. Since the CoE is more selective than L&S, they guard against back door entries such as you are proposing, permitting transfer as an exception for unusual merit and not a routine action.

Perhaps someone on CC has done this and can comment on what was involved? Or, perhaps some have attempted it and been rebuffed, yet are willing to share their stories?

Since entry to CoE is not assured, you should have a backup plan for a degree within L&S and know that you can live with that if you do not get your transfer to engineering.

it’s difficult to transfer from L/S to CoE. CoE is pretty selective about it…they have webpage somewhere where they outline all the things they look for in a transfer from from a different college. CoE to L/S, on the other hand, is easy. very easy.

aha. here it is: [Change of College — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](Change of college - Berkeley Engineering)

^Thank you. I think they approve sixty percent of the students to transfer, so if I can finish the lower division courses, I will be able to transfer in two semesters. That would be ideal

if you read it, they highly suggest four semesters before applying. The 60% is overall and most have completed all the requirements for the two years with decent GPA before transferring.

They do highly suggest four semesters, but if you apply your freshman year and get rejected you can try again. So if you’re going to have a pretty good GPA, OP, I’d give it a try.

EECS is by far the hardest to transfer into. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is recommended.
