I was waitlisted for the Fall 2015 semester and did not make it into Stony Brook University. I am now starting plan B which is to go to Suffolk County Community College and then transfer to Stony Brook University after my first semester - Spring 2016. I am starting at Suffolk with 35 credits as an entering freshman and after my first semester I will have 49 credits.
I am entering SCCC with a total of 26 AP credits (mostly 4s and 5s), 3 CLEP credits and 6 College English transfer credits. As a result, I need to complete only 1 semester at SCCC before I transfer to Stony Brook.
My AP scores are:
•AP Computer Science: 5
•AP Physics C: Mechanics: 5
•AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism: 4
•AP Calculus BC: 4
•AP Calculus AB: 5
•AP Physics B: 3
•AP Statistics: 3
My SAT score is 2000
High School Average of 89, 93 weighted
Many people have told me that the reason I was waitlisted and didn’t get into Stony Brook was because I declared my major as computer science and I should have declared as undecided. What do you think?
Should I apply for the Spring 2016 semester at Stony Brook as undecided or for Computer Science (which is what I plan on achieving)?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
There’s a lot that goes into the admissions process, particularly for Comp Sci. If you’re interested in CS, then it’s best if you apply into it directly; it’s harder to gain admission to the major once you’ve been admitted into something else.
That said – sounds like you’ve got the Calc already, which is good; you’ll want to make sure you take the Suffolk equivalents of our two intro CS courses (114 and 215). Check stonybrook.edu/transfer and you can see what transfers here.
Hope this helps.

@sbuadmissions If I am part of the Joint Admissions program, and have declared my major as just Liberal Arts at Suffolk, will my courses/credits transfer over automatically? Also, I am entering the Suffolk Honors Program and was not given a representative from SBU to select my courses with. I contacted the Honors Office and they advised me that a representative will check in with me periodically while I am studying at Suffolk to keep me on par with SBU’s standards and requirements. Lastly, if I fulfill the necessary credits my 3rd semester, can I graduate WITH the joint admissions program and transfer to SBU for the following spring semester? I’d appreciate any insight… thanks in advance!~
For CS, the joint program with Suffolk is an EXCELLENT option. And you can always check in with one of our admissions folks here, or with Tracey, our Joint Admissions coordinator, who can assist with the details.
