Hey everyone, I was reading the UT transfer and everyone I've spoken to in Norfolk is unsure of my chances of pulling off a transfer.

I have a 3.4 after my first semstar at ODU my HS gpa was 3.44 and a 1110 SAT.
In college, i'm on the WODU college radio exec board as business manager, college news paper as a staff writer, and french club.

Also I am an eagle scout with a bunch of other EC like track and field and marching band from high school.

My question do I have more of a 50/50 shot, pretty good one or none at all?

Any advice from anyone I would love.
Willie P.

First off.... I wouldn't really listen to this cav guy.....I have read a few of his posts, and a vast majority have been universally wrong/biased

Out of HS, you may have had a shot, but I would say waitlisted

5 years ago I had a 3.7 with an 1190 and ridiculous ECs from a great HS....I obviously got in, but it was far from a sure thing.

As a transfer, yes, I would say you are in. You have a good shot of getting into any VA state school with over a 3.0 as a transfer. UVa, W&M, VT, and JMU would take someone with your ODU GPA.

I hope it works out for you, and please, keep in mind that these boards are simply another form of propoganda.

i have to agree w/ bsbllallstr8, uva and wm would probably be out of reach. but as you are asking about jmu, yes, i think you have a good chance. i don't know much about transfers, but fresh out of high school i think you would have a very good chance, and probably get in. i don't see why transfers would be that much different--your sat is very good for jmu, and being an eagle scout is good.

again, i'm no expert, but that is my opinion--definitely apply if you want to go there.

jmu2005, your comments are ridiculous. I've been following this whole admissions thing for several years now, and was considering schools several strata above what you likely looked at. While I was in high school, I saw dozens and dozens of people apply to JMU, and I have a good idea of what a successful applicant looks like. I would question your judgement in this case, as your post reflects a lack of logic and contains several idiomatic errors which lead me to question the "quality" of a JMU education - or the quality of past admits, such as yourself.

bsbllallstr8, jmu2005 was right - a GPA of 3.4 out of ODU would make one competitive for UVA. I know several people here from lower instate publics who transferred in with GPAs at or below the 3.4 level.

i did get declined. I'm not sure if everyone gets the same letter or not.
and i'm not sure how much this may have hurt me, but i've taken no math or science courses. Alot of english and liberal arts in general..

Keep your chin up and make the most of your ODU experience. Remember, there are pluses to being in a more urban school, such as networking and internships. As a business major that can be very useful. Move closer to campus and enjoy it. ODU is a good school, you’ll be fine.
