Transfer out of BS/MD!

Hey Guys!! I was wondering if a student got accepted into BU 7 year med program or Northwestern HPME 7 year med; then can they transfer out of that school and apply to a Med school after finishing 3 years of that program (which I'm guessing is the under-grad part). I mean like can they take the MCAT and receive a good score can they discontinue these programs after the third year and go straight to a Med School??

If this were a regular 8-year B.S./M.D., I would say I don’t see why not.

However, the problem with abbreviated programs like the ones you mention is that you don’t receive your bachelor degree until your first year of medical school. Dropping out would likely mean that you wouldn’t receive the bachelor degree at all, so it would make normal admissions to medical school a lot tougher despite a good MCAT score, as almost all normal route applicants HAVE a bachelors degree (and there is no guarantee that you would even score well). That’s only if you decided to continue and graduate in three years.

Again, however, if this friend of yours (I’m assuming you’re asking this for someone you know) decides to pursue another year of undergrad after he/she drops out of the accelerated B.S./M.D. program (in order to pursue a bachelors degree), then I don’t see why normal admissions would be tough.

For the record, the two programs you mentioned are very tough to get into. Nearly every single applicant vying for a spot in the program intends to complete the program and matriculate to the affiliated medical school. I don’t see the point in applying to the abbreviated programs if all you intend to do is drop out of them afterwards, especially when that spot could’ve went to someone much more willing to complete the program. =</p>

You CAN be in HPME for 3 years, receive your Bachelor’s degree (which does not happen after your first year of medical school, it happens at the end of 3 years), take the MCAT, then apply out of medical school. However, for HPME, you are given 4 class waivers that you can use to get out of taking certain classes, and if you waive these classes initially you probably would have to take them to receive your degree. I think it’s a terrible thing to do that whole scenario, because you are taking the spot from someone who is actually a morally decent person and intends to keep their spot, but if you really are that way you can do it. HPME doesn’t kick you out if you take the MCAT and they don’t kick you out if you apply to other medical schools.

^^ I retract what I said about the Bachelors thing for this program. Though I’ve heard that just about every other accelerated BS/MD program (6 or 7 years) doesn’t give you your bachelors degree until medical school as a way of trying to keep students from applying out.

I apologize if I’m wrong about this particular program, though.

Hey thanks bsmdman and XelbMS. And its all good if your wrong about when a student gets his Bachelors degree XelbMS because I’ll look more into that. And yea I agree with both of you that it is kinda immoral to take that seat from another student. However, I was asking because my friend wants to go to a BS/MD 7 year program so that he wont have a lot of pressure for the MCAT. But at the same time he can’t afford to go to Boston’s medical school which is very expensive. So he wants to try to get into UCLA, UCSD, or Baylor whose Med School is fairly cheaper compared with Boston’s.

^You friend can go to any UG on full tuition/full ride Merit scholarship, take as many years as he wants to graduate (only 4 are covered by awards though) and apply to any Med. School he wants. I am not sure that you stated your friend’s goal correctly because it does not make any sense.
