I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle, as it so often does. Curious to hear experiences with this and additional points of view. To me, it seems a very smart ploy for the universities, but not so great for the student. Are there any data on how many students actually convert on the TP offer?
Universities are rejecting a whole group of students but managing to make them feel better about it. TPs seem targeted to soften the rejection sting for legacy and donor families as well as URMs, enabling the university to keep a relationship with these students and families. Students get a ‘prescription’ to cure what ailed their original application and the promise (though not always a guarantee) of a second chance.
For the student, is this good? Some will lay out their plan and execute. For others, I think it’s like the mirage of a wait list. Students may cling to the school that rejected them when they should be moving on.
