Transfer Predicament

I have just received an acceptance from vandy. Its great and I'm happy, but they require a deposit and enrollment by May 10th. The school I really want to go to, Georgetown, doesn't give a decision until june 1st. Other schools washu and nyu don't tell me until after that date. If I wait too long, Vanderbilt might have been my only acceptance.

heyyy i think you can either call vandy and explain your situation to them (although it might be a lil bit awkward) or call gtown, NYU, Wash U (funny, i applied to all three of those as well...) and tell them you have to make a deposit at vandy before then and ask them to review your app and get back to you sooner. i'm in the same situation with wellesley and i think that's what i'm going to do.
side note, my best friend applied to transfer to vandy, how did you find out? email or letter? if it was a letter, was it to your house? thanks!

My friend and I both received our letters in the mail today. He didn't get in, but I think all the letters will get mailed on the 15th. good luck to your friend.

anyone else?

doesn't a deposit just hold your space, it doesn't bind you to go there. i think if you make the deposit and end up matriculating at another school, you just lose your deposit. I think a few hundred dollars is worth piece of mind.

i would agree with what etch said. they cant bind you i wouldnt think

but a few hundred dollars is an arm and a leg for many people, which is why her situation is critical for anyone in a huge budget.

For some schools the deposit is refundable; you need to check. If it is refundable up to a certain date and Vandy is a school you would go to; then do it!

You could also look into deferring your acceptance, like asking for an extension. I've heard of some people doing that places for a little while just to make sure. You can say you want to visit the school after you finish classes for the summer or something too to make sure it's right or something. There are a lot of valid reasons to push for a slight extension, so it might be worth it to ask for one.

stop being cheap! dont risk it! put all the money you need to, to save urself a spot just in case of emergency.

No offense, but there are some people who legitimately cannot afford to pay that deposit more than once

well those people are probably getting financial aid on college, and therefore could make same claim for this. otherwise, hey, take a loan, and pay it back in a few years when youll easilly have the money

I think deposits are credited to your second semester/quarter bill, if you do attend.

Although it might be hard, try sending the Vandy deposit. That way you have a place to go and other choices (once you find out about the other universities). Over the summer, you'll make some money so try and look at it like an investment.

BTW, I would not call admissions unless you're telling them that the deposit is a hardship (I would not say you are waiting on other schools, as they may figure that you'll except elsewhere). They might be able to do something about that. No need to involve other schools.

Just an opinion.
