Neice was deferred EA last year and eventually declined admission to UNC. She is considering transferring to UNC although she's very happy at the top-25 LAC that turned out to be second choice. Here's the question: UNC website says transferring in as a sophomore one must have 30 credits but the student will have only taken 8 classes at the LAC, which is considered a full load (two foreign lang labs and one science lab). She has done very well and will continue to do so, I'm sure. Has all A's going into exam time. Will they consider her a soph, even though she doesn't have the traditional 15 credits per semester? Dream has been to go to UNC, but not sure about the transfer process OR if it will be difficult to get aquainted with new people, procedures, etc..... Any experience or insights?

I would call admissions on this. Does she have any AP credit or other credits? They may count those as well. Transferring in is not near as difficult for oss as they do not face a limit on # like the freshmen do. As far as fitting in I would ask her WHY she likes Carolina? What does she expect will be different from where she is now? Given the low number of OSS, what is the make up of her current school? What are the positives about her current school vs the negatives? Does she know anyone at UNC already? Does she make friends easily and is she outgoing and assertive? If at all possible see if she can get on facebook and get some connections for an overnight stay downthere.
Some kids get to their dream schools and the day to day existence is quite different. What they PICTURE about their dream school may not be reality. There also is the possibility she wants to apply and get in finally but maybe not go.....if she is goal driven. Good luck!!

Bump....Any other transfer experiences or insights?
