I applied to transfer to Maryland for fall 2011. On the website it says that successful applicants have completed a math course equivalent to Math110 and and English 101. I have the math class, but never took English 101 b/c I tested out of it at my college. I did take a seminar in which we wrote many essays, but I'm not sure if that would transfer as an English course. What should I do? UMD is my first choice. I'm also instate and got in last year as a freshmen applicant.

I had something like this happen to me last winter. I had credit for basic English from a class I took over the summer at a local community college. I wanted to transfer to UMD for the Spring but I was rejected on the basis that I didn’t have an ENGL101 class that transfered properly to UMD, so I was told to take an English course and I’m applying again; they don’t actually require you to take an ENGL101 class specifically, if you took a class that will transfer as something higher than 101 they will also accept that.
