Transfer Question

I just finished my freshman year of college and am hoping to transfer to Fordham's theatre program in the fall. However, while my high school GPA was a 3.83, w/ a 28 on my ACT and tons of extra-curriculars and leadership positions, my college grades have turned out a little differently than I would have liked. My first semester I only made a 3.0 and second semester a 2.8. The thing is though, that this past year doctors found two nodules on my thyroid and I had been travelling back and forth between my university and my home state for testing and the like, and to be quite honest, my mind was about as far away from my school work as it had ever been. Cancer scares tend to do that and even now I am waiting on my final test result. I know that the grades I made freshman year are simply not good enough for Fordham's standards. However, when I sent in my final transcript I included a letter explaining a little my situation and why my grades did not fairly represent my academic reputation. Do you think that they will take any of this in to account? Or will they simply look at the grades alone?
