Transfer Question

Hey guys, I'm looking to transfer to IU in fall 09 from Broward Community College in south Florida. I plan to transfer into Kelley, but getting into IU itself first is my main concern. So I need an opinion here.

I was planning on applying Jan 20 or so,when my Fall grades were posted, however, I'm starting to think that applying before the priority November date would be wiser. Only problem is, i'm not sure that the line-up of classes that I've taken thus far are impressive enough for me to apply that early.

Here are my stats. If I applied in November, the classes I would have completed are: English Comp1
, English Comp 2,
American Hist(AMG2020),
Sociology(syg2000)
Biology 1(bsc1005)
Intro to Business (geb1011)
Health Wellness (hlp1081)
Music Appreciation (mul2010)
Public Speaking (spc1600)
Computer Literacy (cgs1060)

The classes that I have completed for my major will have been, with all As:

Financial Acct 1 and 2 (A)
Macroeconomics (A)
Microeconomics (A)

Now, when I apply, I will be telling the college that in the current semester(that fall) I will be taking Statistics/College Algebra/Finite Math/Managerial Accounting (yeah I know, a lot of math)

And the semester after that (Spring) I will be taking Business Calculus, and business law. ( in my current community college)

Now, do you guys think that I would be better off applying for early decision with those general classes plus the few business classes, (3.78GPA and 41 credits), or waiting until after the early admission deadline and wait until I have the fall semester grades(maths and managerial acct) under my belt?

I also have for extracurriculars: Member of PBL (business club), and chapter leader for Adopt-A-Street program here in south florida.(basically garbage clean-up for a 2 mile stretch)

I know this post was long and possibly confusing, but I need to start figuring this out, hah. Thanks in advance!

I would apply as a transfer as soon as possible with the classes you have, which seem more than adequate to gain acceptance to IU. But getting into IU as a transfer can take a lot of time, especially it seems this past year from posts on this board about transfering to IU.

Getting into Kelley should not be hard with your grades and schedule. However, you need to think about meeting as many I-Core prerequisites as possible before getting to IU, since some of the prerequisites are difficult if not impossible to complete before you get to IU as some just will not transfer from anywhere. And since you will be a junior when you get to Bloomington, you may not be able to take Icore until you are a senior if you don't meet the Icore prereqs. This would add a lot of expense and, depending on your business major concentration, make it very difficult to graduate in four years.

Regarding your upcoming schedule: By all means take your finite class in the fall at cc. Lots of schools do not offer finite and it is an Icore requirement. Finite Math (1202) at Broward will meet Kelley's requirement.

Taking statistics, College Algebra, Managerial Accounting (2071) will not help you at all in meeting Icore prereqs. These will not transfer for specific courses needed to get into Kelley according to credit transfer service:
Credit Transfer Service Home: Office of Admissions ~ IU Bloomington

So, your fifteen ICore prerequisites would be completed at the end of the Fall 2010 semester with these courses:
CC finished already:
ENG-W 131 (CC: Composition 1-- enc 1101)
BUS-X 104 (CC: public speaking-- spc 1600)
ECON-E 201 (CC: microecon-- 2023)
BUS-A 201 (CC: principles of accounting 1-- acg 2001)
BUS-A 202 (CC: principles of accounting 2-- acg 2011)
CC to take in coming year:
BUS-L 201 (CC: business law-- 2111)
MATH-M 118 (CC: finite math-- mfg 1202)
MATH-M 119 (CC: business calculus-- mac 2223)
BUS-X 204 (CC: Business Communications-- ost 2335)
BUS-K 201 (Ivy Tech Community Coll -- CIS 101 internet class)
Fall 2010 14 credit hours at IU:
BUS-G 202 2hr
ECON-E 370 3hr
BUS-A 100 1hr
BUS-X 201 3hr
BUS-X 220 2 hr
BUS-Z 302 3hr [not an Icore prereq, but needed to graduate Kelley; Macroecon is required to graduate too, and you have it already]

The big problem you have in terms of qualifying to take Icore in Spring 2011 is the required K201/X201 sequence. K201 is a prerequisite for X201, so if you have neither when you arrive as a junior, you won't be taking Icore until Summer 2011 at the earliest. However, you can take CIS 101 at Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis online and it counts for K201. It's expensive for an OOS, but I don't think you can get a class anywhere else to transfer to IU for K201 and therefore eliminate the need to going two semesters to IU prior to taking ICore. I would sign up early and get it in fall or spring, as it may not be offered online in summer. Warning too that CIS 101 may not be acceptable since it is an online class; don't really know, but a2wolves has said it will not matter is it is online. Also, your Computer Literacy (cgs1060) will not get you credit for K201.

Your Intro to Business (geb1011) at Broward is not an Icore prereq but is needed to apply to Kelley.

Also, you have some good CC classes that will help meet Kelley's 27-hour gen ed requirement:
A&H
Music Appreciation (mul2010) (gets credit for MUZ Z101)
English Comp 2 (enc 1102) (gets credit for ENG L202))

M&N
Computer Literacy (cgs1060) (gets credit for CSCI A110)
Biology 1(bsc1005) (gets credit for BIOL L104)

S&H
American Hist(AMG2020) (gets credit for HIST H106)
Sociology(syg2000) (gets credit for SOC S100)

I would take one more one hundred level S&H class at CC that transfers to IU, and then take a couple of three-hundred level classes your senior year (it will probably be a one course each semester sequence) at IU that meet both the International Dimension and the requirement for two three-hundred level S&H classes. That would complete Kelley's 27 hour gen ed requirement and the International Dimension requirement.

So, aside from the k201/x201 sequence, you can get a lot done at CC to get Icore prerequisites done pretty easily and graduate in four years, depending on your major. It would be tough for something like accounting, as it has lots of required courses that have to be taken in a particular order. You could put off taking Z302 in Fall 2010 and take some other course if it helps with getting your majors courses in the right sequence.

It all looks very doable in four years for most business concentrations though, as you already have a very solid foundation in terms of the classes you have taken, transferable I-core prereqs you have available to you at CC, and your good grades.

Oops. Meant to say Fall 2009 (not Fall 1010) and Spring 2010 (not Spring 2011) above.

Okay, I do have to take college algebra this coming fall as it is a pre-req for business calc at my CC, and I do think I need the preparation as well. Where did you see that my Public Speaking (SPC1600) would fill the Bus-X 104 requirement? I looked at the credit transfer, but failed to see the correlation. Statistics isn't required, but do you think I should take it to maybe prepare me for some Statistics stuff down the road? And thanks for pointing out the Managerial Acct point, my Acct2 Class fills the Intro to Managerial Acct requirement.

Also, you list the sub for Finite Math as MGF1202, but I found the equiv to be MGF1106...any input on that?

K-201, I won't be able to take until I get to UI...Is this going to be a big problem? There is really no way to take it at the community college online, Unlesss MAYBE I do it in summer of 2009. (Also, the price is a bit steep) The problem with all of this is that, after my current credits, I only have I believe six more classes (19 credits) that I can take. The ones currently planned are Finite Math/Business Calc/College Alg(Not sure if it transfers)/Business Law/Business Comm. So I do have a spot for one more class...What would you recommend? You said another S&H class, but what would be a good choice in your opinion?

So, I'm reading through these posts...and starting to realize...I may not be able to afford the OOS tuition...I thought that you only needed to pay OOS tuition for the first year, but yeah, wrong there. I see that IU doesn't really offer full loans, or at least thats the idea I get from reading posts, so what are my options? My parents can't really afford anything so I'm on my own here...

Well, if tuition is a problem, look at other options. First one being - stay at your current school. IU allows you to transfer up to 90 credits - most schools only allow 60-70. You can complete most I-Core prerequisites as well as most general electives at your CC, and then transfer when you are done. If you REALLY want to go to Indiana, and are willing to sacrifice a year, you could declare yourself an independent, move to Indiana, take courses at Ivy Tech, find a job, housing, and then apply for admission after a year. You will get in-state tuition and being an independent you will also receive a ton of grant money, making IU extraordinarily cheap.

Second option is to just look at other schools. Being in Florida, you have amazing cheap transfer options, starting with UF. UF is a great school, and it costs next to nothing to attend. It's got a strong business program, and they give a big advantage to applicants who transfer from Florida CC's. At Miami, you could get 3/4 of your tuition paid for with the transfer 1/2 tuition scholarship and the 11,000 grant they give in financial aid. Florida State is also inexpensive for a public school, and isn't as difficult to gain admission to. All 3 have strong business programs, ranking in the top 75 in both the US News and Business Week rankings of undergraduate programs.

UF is next to impossible to get into now, even as a transfer student (they didnt really accept anyone below a 3.9 pre-profesional and overall) this year due to budget cuts, and will only get worse. UM, eh, I hate miami and really I want to get out of Florida, that's a huge thing for me. I think I'm going to suck it up and take on the 40k debt or whatever going to IU will cost me and start searching for some scholarships and grants and such from Jewish organizations, heh. I know it's a big rediculous to take on roughly 40k debt just for an undergrad, but I really think it's the right move for me. Staying in Florida is just such a demotivator for me.

I don't think 40K is TOO ridiculous compared to what I have seen from other people on this site. The average amount of debt is around 20K for graduating seniors.

Again, I would STRONGLY suggest that if you are itching to go to Indiana, look at staying at your CC for an extra semester or two, and build up your transferable credits so that when you get to IU you are only taking classes that weren't available at your CC. This means load up on Gen Ed classes, fill most of the I-Core prerequisites, etc. Every semester you're taking classes elsewhere, that's tens of thousands of dollars that you are saving.

Keep in mind that the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side, Indiana may look appealing now, but when you start paying back that $40,000 in student loans, or when you are sitting in January in your dorm room because it's 13 degrees outside and no snow, you may think Florida was a better option. Do not overlook the opportunities that your own state is giving you, the Florida educational system is one of the only one's doing in right in terms of finances for college and giving the in-state students the help they need.
