Transfer Question

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm considering transferring for fall 2009 and am trying to plan accordingly. If a student graduated at the top of their high school class with a strong extracurricular, leadership, and volunteer background, and then continues being involved in college while also maintaining a near 4.0 GPA in rigorous classes, would they be a strong transfer candidate for a school like Boston College? Since college admissions are so hyper competitive right now, it's difficult to judge who would be a competitive candidate. Do any BC transfers have any insight to share on this topic?
Thank you!

Freshman admit rate about 27%. Transfer rate about 16%.

Once you have 2 years of college under your belt, your HS transcript doesn't weigh much at all. You need to shine during your CC years.

With a 16% transfer rate, BC is not a safety transfer for even a 4.0 student with good ECs. So, have some safeties in mind.

You summed it up - it is hyper competitive. These next few years will be a peak in terms of number of students looking for spots in colleges. You just need to do your best, apply to a range of schools, and know that you can make your future bright at nearly any half-way decent school.

Good luck,

Well, I'm going to be starting as a freshman at the University of Maryland and I'm in their honors program, so I'm not transferring from a cc, and I'll only have one year of college under my belt when I transfer. I was waitlisted at BC and still really want to go there. I know UMD is a really good school though too, so i'm only transferring to bc because if i don't get in there i don't really care to transfer.

redsoxgirl- i'm kind of in the same situation as you --> i'm going to NYU (which is a really good school) but i was waitlisted at brown & northwestern and still really want to go to one of the two.

dancintherain- yeah, i want to give umd a try, but i still want to make sure that i do the right stuff while I'm there so that the option to transfer to Boston College will still be possible. unfortunately it seems like even with a great high school record, lots of strong college ec's, and a near 4.0 college gpa, there's no promises of getting in as a transfer.

If you try to transfer as a sophomore, then your HS transcript will likely play a stronger role. However, the 16% transfer rate is still going to be in play (unless you can find breakdowns showing a difference between soph and junior transfers).

Good luck,
