Transfer Question

Im thinking about going the transfer rout since my dream schools are UCLA and UCSD. I screwed up in high school 3.7 UCGPA, 1050 SAT. I was wondering what the average gpa would be for poeple who transfer to UCLA and UCSD? Is it as competative as Freshman applicants

A little more competitive than for freshman, but not a very significant difference (~24% versus ~21%).

The average (posted) GPA for transfer admissions is 3.5 at UCLA (says so on their site), though take that with a grain of salt. They do look at impacted majors, and so that will matter -- you'll want a higher GPA for those. 3.7 is good, but the SAT is a little low.

I have no idea how they consider the 'other', non-GPA factors in transfer admissions.

What about these colleges such as LA Valley College claiming 90% acceptance rate at UCLA, and 100% at other UC's?

http://www.lavc.edu/StudentServWebsite/TAP/index.html

If im in TAP my chances will be that good? Or is there something fishy there not saying?

Here's the caveat with the honors programs: Most students doing TAPs are already very driven to begin with. However, what I gathered aeons ago was that the best TAPs (SMC, Pierce, PCC) are basically like one of those "Advance to Go" cards you get in Monopoly. Then again, I've been put under the impression that this has changed since my prehistoric experience, so your mileage may vary.

Maxpowers

you go to valley college?

i go to valley and i am in TAP too.

what is your major

Well, I meet the gpa requirement for the program (3.7 in high school), so should I join this program? Anyone with any experiance?

-Undecided- the 24% acceptance rate you posted was for regular cc classes right?
Are programs like TAP the only way to transfer from cc to UC? Or can any cc student do it?

maxpowers

i am in TAP it's says above so do join the TAP maintain your GPA high in college and believe me you get a much higher chance to get in

Plus you can talk to TAP couns. and they will help you a lot with everything taking classes, application, personal statement etc

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that: TAP counsellors rock! Mine helped me out soooo much back in those unsure days of youthful...youth...time.

the same for me UCLAri

they helped me very much too especially with my personal statement. i think other couns.(not TAP) have no idea what they are talking about. the TAP ones are there for you and they are actually doing their job

My one suggestion to any new CC transfer hopefuls: Get to know your Honors/TAP counsellors! They are the inside track to the top schools that your CC transfers students into! I can't stress this enough! UCLA and Cal were like cutting butter with a hot chainsaw by the time I got done with my one year at Pierce!

while you have a chainsaw, i thought i had ion-rifle (hyper kinetic rifle, RPG, minigun, whatever) but i still got rejected from UCD.

you simply can't claim 100% acceptance.

Well, I'll be honest here, I had a 4.0 GPA with 7 APs prior; I did it all in one year, and was awarded dept. and full college honors while I headed up some stuff with the honors society and did an ESL class on the side while TAing and working part-time. I was a busy little student.

Hot chainsaws are hard work to get...

Then I got lazy and alas, here I am now, wondering where three tenths of my GPA went...

Ive noticed alot of people in this forum that got into UCLA via transfer have like 3.8 - 4.0. Do I have a chance at UCLA or UCSD if I get like a 3.5 3.4. Also what are some other factors they take into consideration excluding gpa? I ask because I took couple community college courses at Valley as a High schooler, got B's, so itll be impossible for 4.0 now.

Maxpowers don't worry about it, with 3.5 or 3.4 with TAP you do have a higher chance to get in. Other factors that they look at besides GPA are if you are part of any clubs, organizations and volunteer work.

So when you do go to valley, i strongly recommend for you to get involved in everything there.

Maxpowers, i know i asked you thousand times what is your major but you never answered...I go to valley college and i know how everthing works, to whom you should talk to or what should you do. Feel free to email me.

oh by the way, if you are in TAP, if for any reason you don't get in to the university that you want, you can re-apply with another major.......isn't that cool

Yeah that is awesome. Im pretty much undecided on my major, but I think itll' be in Political Science or history, probably a major thats good for law school.

All majors are good for law school. Study what you enjoy the most.

Thanks for the advice, so in this TAP program Ill have to take harder classes than I would regularly? Kinda like taking Honors or Ap courses in high school?

you might consider philosophy too. It's not impacted and it's great for law school

You take regular classes with regular students, you just do extra work in them, that's it. if you are gonna take honors classes tell me which ones and i'll tell you if they are easy or not. i took about 9 and needed only 6(this depends on the major)

Philosophy is actually a good major. It helps you learn to read, write, and most importantly, THINK. Those logics classes are no joke!
