I am currently a freshman considering transferring to Notre Dame. On the transfer website, it says you must commit to an academic program for one year following your transfer. So, for example if you transfer into the engineering school, you must stay there your entire sophomore year.

Does anyone know how rigorously this is enforced? For example, if I don't want to study engineering after the first semester will I actually be "stuck" in the engineering program?

I don’t think they will prohibit you from switching. However, I think it would be a good idea to give any college a full year to see if you want to switch or not. This is especially true since a lot of your credits won’t help you with the switch (i.e. engineering classes won’t help you toward a Spanish degree) and you will likely lose at least a semester of progress. The main thing is they don’t want you to transfer into one college because you think it is easier and then immediately switch to another college.
