transfer rom the College of Letters and Science to the College of Engineering?

At UCSB how hard is it to transfer from the College of Letters and Science to the College of Engineering?
I've been admitted to UCSB College of L&S as undeclared, but I know I want to get a degree in mechanical engineering. Has anyone had experience petitioning and getting in to the college of engineering at UCSB?

Are the lower division courses in the College of Engineering way different? Or Can I take all the same math and physics and engineering courses if I'm in the college of letters and science? I'm not sure how the different college system works - are they really separate???

P.S. if this seems weird, it's because I'm French, not really familiar with the US system.

Thanks

You should call or email one of the undergrad counselors in the engineering school. Traditionally tranferring into engineering has been very difficult; most of the slots are reserved for JC transfers. Things may have changed, which is why I suggest you call and ask.

I did something similar – changing major from Mech. Engr to Electrical Engr.

The process entails taking certain classes and getting a good GPA (usually >3.0). These classes are closed to the major (only ME majors can get in) so you have to petition to get an ‘add’ code to enroll in the class. Permission into these classes depend on your GPA, class size, and performance in the previous course of the series (like doing good in ME 14 before getting into ME15). This all has to be done showing that you can graduate in four years which means you should have certain amount of units.

Keep in mind that there are two GPAs: major and overall. The major GPA is based on a few select classes (Mech engr, in your case). The overall gpa is based on all courses taken at the UC.

After a while, if you fulfilled these requirements, you can petition to have your major officially changed.

specifically: http://www.me.ucsb.edu/dept_site/student_info/ug_change_major.html</a></p>

here’s the reply I got from the admissions coordinator:

It is currently extremely difficult to change major into Mechanical
engineering at UC Santa Barbara. With over 2000 students who applied for
ME at UCSB for F10, many of those high achieving students were admitted to
undeclared and hope to change major into ME.

Numerous students petitioned to change major into ME this year after taking the
correct preparation courses and only a small fraction were successful.
Students with strong GPAs were turned away due to lack of space.

dang…so even with all the courses and the minimum GPA your petition may still be rejected…i hope i got in.

With only the minimum GPA you’re sure not to get in.

Gotta get a 4.0 to have a chance, I guess… The engineering office recommended I accept an offer from another university where I was accepted for ME…
