Hey guys,

So im going into my 4th year at CC, (planning on applying to schools in the fall both for spring admit, and fall admit). I just wanted some insight to how the transfer system is, unfortunately during my first semester of college my father passed, and threw me in a downward spiral which i've just gotten my self out of. Did a lot of double work and replaced my D's and F's to B's and a few A's. I currently have a GPA of 2.3 going in this semester. Really im just looking to get out of the CC system and move on. I have IGETC finished and all major classes finished up. Realistically im looking at the CSU's, I've been thinking that if i spend this year getting that 2.3 to at least a 3 something i could apply to some UC's. But then i'd be spending all this year my 4th, applying next fall technically will be my 5th and it'll take forever to finish my BA. So again im looking at the CSU's, Univ of Hawai'i manoa, vanguard, SFSU, SJSU, SDSU, and thinking about the private schools USC, LMU, maybe chapman. I have a long list of EC's, i picked my grades up drastically. Im in the SoCal region, any suggestions of schools i should try? I'm currently on the mens soccer team on my CC, idk if that would help. Thanks!

I’m going to tell you this. If you don’t live near any of those campus’s and your GPA is below a 3.0, you’re going to have a hard time getting in. Look for schools that have a ‘service area’ of California, which means that anyone is considered local admission. SDSU, SFSU extremely hard to get into if you’re out of the area. CSUN, CSUDH, Sonoma and a couple of other schools MAY accept you because they consider all of CA local admission.

For USC, your chances are VERY slim… Most people have at least above a 3.0 entering into USC. Also, if there’s a way you can redo all your ‘C’ classes; I’d highly advise you to redo them. It’ll greatly improve your GPA, and you’ll have a better chance at the schools you’re looking at.

The reason why I’m telling you this is because I had a put down that I had a 2.3 when I was applying to SDSU, CSUSM, and Fresno State. Little did I know I put down the incorrect GPA but they still denied me even though I told them it was incorrect and they saw my final transcripts. I did get accepted into CSUN with a 2.66 gpa. Not the best but I plan on improving when I start school in a couple of weeks.

Good Luck!

like smurray09 stated above look at schools in your service area, youll have a better chance. I know most cc also have a TAG type program called pathways with CSUDH, look into that.

Im in the OC region, nearest i think would be UCI. But since its a UC i feel like i wouldn’t have a shot regardless. So this semester im basically doing 2 make-up classes and with both of them im hoping that gpa will go up a little bit.

It will go up… but for certain schools you’ll need a 3.0 or higher depending on the major. Try to get A’s in those classes. Also if you can do Academic Renewal/Academic Forgiveness so you won’t have to take a bunch of classes over. How many credits do you have total?

Btw @Landonnnnnn the nearest CSU to you would be CSU Fullerton, but it’s greatly impacted. Call up the CSUF and see if you have a shot at getting in. Ask them what the average GPA for transfers students is. I think if you have a GPA in the high 2.0s then you’ll have a shot.

I agree with what the others had to say.

If you are in the transfer service area for CSU Fullerton you may be guaranteed admission in a non-impacted major assuming that you complete the golden 4. (First year English composition, Critical Thinking, Oral Communication, and a transfer level Math.)

I was in a similar situation as you and I did academic renewal to bring up my GPA from a 2.4(?) and I finished with a 3.2. I got into 3/4 CSU’s and 2/4 UC’s. I decided to pick a CSU to save money for graduate school. Good luck!

You’ve gotten some great advice, but I just want to add 1 thing. Many private schools do not honor academic forgiveness or even repeated classes. If you retake a class, they often only give you the average of the 2, not just the higher grade.

@cmccl91 Quick question. Can you do academic renewal on C grades? Or just D’s and F’s?

Just D’s and F’s as far as I know. At my school you had to petition to re-take classes that you got a C in I believe.

Aw man academic renewal wouldn’t have helped me much then lol.
