EC’s - I founded a nonprofit organization in senior year of high school to train the homeless in basic trades then set them up with employment contracts at local companies. It’s the reason I didn’t apply to any colleges, even with good high school stats. I’ve been working at it, as well as heavily being engaged in volunteer and nonprofit activities around Los Angeles and San Francisco the last 4 years. Also, I’ve been a creative writer for a while. I won the Regional Gold Key Scholarship from the Alliance on Young Artists and Writers in 2005 (senior year) and have published several short stories and poems in national magazines. And my novella was picked up by Vintage Independent Contemporaries, division of Random House Inc. in August of 2009.
Hooks - Nothing specifically. I want to be a civil rights attorney and philanthropist, my life is and pretty much will always be dedicated to helping others and discovering and improving myself. I don’t know if that’s a hook, but it’s me lol

Year transferring - I am a sophomore but took spring semester off (couldn’t afford England anymore), so will transfer as a sophomore
Hooks - Biracial? Don’t know if that’s a hook…took the initiative to study abroad, tried to explain my mediocre English grades with a family sickness/death, for Columbia my work at AMNH might help, as they’re affiliated
Essays - Pretty good, discussed how passionate I am about biodiversity and my determination to make a difference.
Recs - I have 4 (one is from a Columbia professor), I hope it’s not too much but some volunteered!

I might be completely hopeless at Columbia, Duke, and Cornell. What do you guys think?
I tried to use my travels as an advantage, but I haven’t taken any liberal arts courses (it’s the English system), I did explain it as the main reason I’m transferring though, for a more interdisciplinary approach.

I should note that my HS GPA was much higher prior to my senior year in high school, when my mother and I were involved in a near-fatal car accident, being sideswiped by a drunk driver. This accident occurred the night before senior year began, and I was forced to miss the first couple of weeks of school. I fell into an extended period of depression and academic apathy and had a miserable GPA (in the 1’s). But, although this led to my admission to UCLA being rescinded, I can truly say that I have grown from this experience and that the lessons I learned the hard way will stick with me for the rest of my life (my GPA proves that, I believe). This was the focus of my essay.
