Transfer student aiming for: CS + Applied Math double major

Hi CC,

I've finished my freshman year at De Anza college and I'm applying to UC Berkeley to transfer as a junior next fall.

I'm interested in all three of computer science, mathematics, and physics/electronics and at I want to become well-versed in all 3. For now I've decided to prioritize math over physics since math is more fundamental and I like it more. As a result I want to get a BA in CS from the College of L&S while double-majoring in applied mathematics.

Is double-majoring in CS and Applied Math viable? If it is viable, is the College of L&S the right place to go, or should I go with EECS?

I should add that I started taking courses in high-school so I will have all the math courses, CS courses, physics w/ calculus series, and IGETC all done by spring. Thus I am eligible for both L&S (BA) and CoE (BS) majors.

If I complete IGETC by spring (which I likely will), do I still have to take arts/humanities in L&S? Ideally I would want to jump in and start doing CS and Math right away instead of spending time on humanities.

Can I apply to both L&S and CoE, or do I have to choose one right now?

For a double major in CS and applied math, L&S CS is easier to work the schedule, since EECS has more major requirements and different breadth requirements. IGETC will fulfill L&S breadth but not engineering breadth. There is also the campus-wide American cultures requirement; De Anza has some courses that will cover it so you can complete it before transfer: [ASSIST Report: DAC 13-14 UCB GE/Breadth Articulation Agreement](http://web1.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=21&dir=1&sia=DAC&ria=UCB&ia=DAC&oia=UCB&aay=13-14&ay=13-14&dora=AMCULT)

The main problem at De Anza is that it does not have courses that articulate to most lower division CS courses (only partial CS 61B is covered): [ASSIST Report](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

West Valley, Evergreen Valley, and Ohlone have courses that cover CS 61B. To get CS 61A, you probably have to go to Laney, and to get CS 61C, you probably have to go to Diablo Valley.

You can cover all of the lower division requirements for applied math at De Anza: [ASSIST Report](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

Note that L&S CS requires one of EE 20N, 40, or 42 for graduation, but not admission. If you find a course that articulates to one of these (e.g. at Ohlone or Ca

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I’m already aware that the 61 series is quite rare outside Berkeley. I’m in the South Bay area so going all the way to Laney or DVC is impossible unless I move to Berkeley city next summer (which I might, to take 61A). Do I have to take the full 61 series to be competitive or will admissions understand and not hold it against me?

I’ve done all the math (calculus, DE, LinAlg), some IGETC, and 3 physics courses (mechanics, e&m, and fluid/thermo etc.) Unfortunately I’ve not been able to get to very many CS courses. I finished Adv Java (not ASSIST-approved but it was there so I took it), I’m taking Discrete Math and Data Communications (networking) in the fall and hopefully Data Structures if I get the class.

So far I have a 4.0 in all subjects which is good for me, but I’m worried that my transcript won’t have much computer science courses when I apply. Is there anything I can do about it at this stage or is it just too late?

Few transfer applicants will have CS 61A or 61C, and even CS 61B availability is not universal, so not having them should not be too much of an issue for admissions. However, taking as many of these (and EE 40) before transfer as possible can reduce the schedule pressure after transfer. It would be a good idea to take one of the courses that is listed as partial CS 61B at the very least.

Beyond that, it is best to complete IGETC, including one of the courses that articulates to the Berkeley American cultures requirement, to reduce the schedule pressure after transfer.

You can preview the CS courses here:
[EECS Course WEB Sites](CAS - Central Authentication Service)

Note that there are unit limitations for transfers who have any units from four year schools (including Berkeley summer sessions). So if you move to the Berkeley or Oakland area, taking CS 61A and/or 61C at Laney or Diablo Valley may avoid the unit limitation that taking them during a Berkeley summer session may get you into trouble with. Check with Berkeley L&S for what the current policy is.
