Transfer student Dilemma

I am a transfer student that has been accepted to both The College of William and Mary and Amherst College. I have spent two years at a community college, and I am looking forward to the fall.

I am having a tough time deciding between the two colleges. I visited William and Mary twice, and it is, without a doubt, my dream school. I love the campus; I love the environment. Also, I have felt especially welcomed at William and Mary as a transfer student.

I did not expect to get accepted to Amherst, and thus, it was rarely on my radar this past year. I visited Amherst recently, but came with many preconceived notions. I believed it would not hold to the William and Mary standard; however, to my surprise, I actually liked Amherst a lot more than expected.

Financially, Amherst is a much more feasible option than William and Mary. While tuition is lower at William and Mary, I am an out-of-state student who is not recieving much aid.

I'm looking for some feedback? I intend to be an English major. In terms of applying for graduate school, which college which give me the advantage?

@isleofviewx3, those transfer applicants who were admitted for the fall had to submit an enrollment deposit by May 15. Did you get a deposit extension? If not, did you already deposit at W&M?

Amherst has a tremendous reputation for grad school placement (we’re talking about Amherst College, not Umass-Amherst, right?) It’s one of those things that’s nearly impossible to quantify, but suffice to say, you certainly wouldn’t hurt yourself choosing Amherst over W&M in that regard.

Finances are a obviously very important, especially for someone who plans to go on to grad school - you should try to graduate as close to debt-free as you can.

Personally, my visit to Amherst put me off - I guess I could put it down to it being a weekend; it seemed the entire campus was badly hung-over - so maybe my decision would be different than yours.

But being financially “much more feasible” while being able to attend one the top LAC’s in the country would make a strong case for Amherst, imo.
