transfer student, new gpa??

Hi! I heard that when you transfer, your GPA from your first school does not carry over. Basically I went to an out of state University my first year of college (last year) and did not do well because of financial/family issues that were affecting me (I know, it’s no excuse…) so I am transferring to my local community college back home in So Cal (for the new fall semester) and I am dedicated to achieving a high gpa and focusing on school only.

I’m asking if my GPA is starting over now that I am going to my community college instead of my previous university, or is that case only if you transfer to a 4 year? And when I transfer again, would I put the GPA from my community college on my app since it is my current institution? Sorry if these questions are kind of dumb! I just do not know I would even have a shot at getting accepted to a cal state because of my previous university’s GPA.

Thank you!

I also took 2 classes with my community college this summer and got A’s in both of them, is this the start of my new GPA?

Also, I am aware that even if your GPA starts over colleges look at all your coursework and it could affect grad school as well.

Everything you do in college is part of your GPA- no do-overs!

Of course everything counts but each university will have a separate GPA calculation. The GPA you have at the CC will be based solely on your courses there but when you apply for transfer, you will have to send your CC transcript as well as the transcript from your first institution. If your GPA at CC is much better than at your first institution, then it will be a positive for your transfer application but they will look at all your transcripts in making a decision.

thank you ! @xraymancs
