Transfer Student, Psychology to Cognitive Science

Hi, I'm a CC student transferring in fall'12, and so far I'd been preparing to transfer as a psych major with the Assist agreements for UCSC and UCD. I wanted to study psych with an emphasis on Cognitive Psychology, and basically see that Cognitive Psychology is very similar to Cognitive Science in its requirements, except that the latter has a higher math requirement and requires computer science courses.

For the under-division requirements for Cognitive Science, the ucsc psych website says:

PSYC 2, Introduction to Psychological Statistics

PSYC 20, Introduction to Cognitive Psychology

Calculus (one of AMS 11A, MATH 11A, 19A or 20A)

Computer Programming (one of CMPE 13/L, CMPS 5C, 5J, 5P, 12A)

I'm taking regular stats at my school right now and can take the business/social science calc next semester. I wouldn't be able to take Intro to Cognitive Psychology until I transfer there (if I get to transfer there, which I hope I do). But, I will not be able to complete the Computer Programming course here at my CC in time to transfer because there is a prerequisite that I'd have to take. I'm submitting the TAG this month and don't know whether to list my major as Psychology or Cognitive Science. I don't want to get denied because I don't have the Computer Science class.

[UC Santa Cruz - Psychology - Undergraduate Program - Declaring Cognitive Science Major](http://psych.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/declaring_cog_sci_major.php)

Based on this, I’d say you should state yourself as a psychology student. It’ll be very easy to switch over later on as soon as you take that one computer programming class. I recommend 5J for that. 5P/5C/12A are more “intro to programming in this language for people who already can program” than true intro classes.

I talked to my counselor and she told me of a past student who applied under Psychology but was not able to switch to Cognitive Science, so she left the school. My counselor will call the school to ask, but I just wanted to ask over here.

Considering I know a guy who switched from engineering to cog sci, I don’t know why someone would be unable to switch from psych to cog sci…let me know if you find out why that happened.
