Transfer Student; SFSU vs Sac State

Hello everyone!

So I am having a bit of a dilemma right now in making a decision of where to attend and could really use some advise and opinions. So I was accepted into both Sac State and SFSU as a transfer, but I live in Sacramento so am really leaning more towards SFSU. The problem is that I was accepted into the Business Department rather than the Kinesiology Department at SFSU and apparently if I wanted to change I would have to wait until Fall 2016 since it is an impacted major, so a whole year.

I am really interested in attending though and I feel like although Sac State would give me more or less the same level of education, the experience would not be as great since I have lived in sacramento all my life. So I was thinking if I DO decide to attend SFSU I could take some business classes during that first year and later elect it as my minor after changing my major to Kinesiology. But I am not sure if that is an efficient plan or not and need a second opinion. I am also afraid that being stuck in a different department would slow me down in the long run or not in terms of graduating and just my whole academic career in general. Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I am not even sure what the difference is between being in a certain department or not. Does being in a certain department limit me in any way. Can I still take Kinesiology courses? Am I limited to Business courses? Should I just avoid all this trouble and go the safe route by attending Sac State since I was accepted into their Kinesiology Department?

If anyone could help me and give me some solid advice I would be truly grateful for it. Unfortunately I only have a week left to decide between the two and I am having a difficulty time due to all these questions and uncertainties. Any information and opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Why not move to SF after graduation?

Hi! Thanks for the response. Do you mean just move to SF after graduating from Sac State?

Yes. You can attend CSU Sacremento less expensively and presumably in your desired major, then graduate and move to San Francisco.

I was actually thinking the opposite, which is go to SFSU for however long and then move back home after graduating. Do you think going to SFSU sounds like a bad idea in my situation and is disadvantageous? I am not worried about it financially so I am covered in that area already. But I have been going to community college for close to 3 years now and I am ready to experience something new.

Yes, it is a bad idea. There is no guarantee of getting into kinesiology so would you be happy with a business degree? If so then head to SF. But I agree with @ucbalumnus that it makes more sense to head to SF after graduation. You should also be asking the School if you can take kinesiology classes as a business major. I would guess that people in the degree program have priority.

Ask the school about your courseload and any possible limitations. If you’re fine with getting a business degree, then go to SF. However, if you really want to get into Kinesiology and you’re sure that’s what you want to do, play it safe and go to Sac State.

Thanks so much for the helpful advice guys!
