Transfer students' majors matter?

I am going to a top 25 university this year as an entering freshman, but I want to transfer to U Penn or Cornell next year, which are my dream school. Besides all the GPA, SAT, and EC factors, would claiming a competitive major in my transfer application, like econ, hurt my chances of getting to U Penn or Cornell more than say declaring math as my major? can transfer students say they are undecided about their major if they are entering sophomores (it probably would not make sense if entering juniors say they are undecided)?

come on anyone?

Very good question - I actually wonder about this myself. Have you tried PMing the mods here or consulting the printed literature?

I don’t think it matters for a few reasons.

Generally, as a freshman you’ll be taking lower division courses. Therefore, you can declare as an Econ major but you’ll most likely end up taking the Micro/Macro series. You might even take an Intermediate Econ course; however, after that chances are you will not be taking any more Econ classes.

Once again generally, schools would rather you complete the lower division/prerequisites at the current institution and then finish the upper division courses once you transfer. I’m pretty certain Juniors cannot declare as Undecided. I would have to look more into it. I have seen Sophomores declare as Undecided. I guess it varies with the schools.

I think the courses you take/course preparation and the major you anticipate to declare at the transfer school are more important than declaring a major at your current school.

im sorry, but what does this have to do with UC Transfers?

It’s not your major that matters. It’s the college you’re applying to that matters. For instance, most schools take more transfers in CAS because it’s their biggest college. As you would imagine, business, engineering, and the others are more competitive because there are fewer spots available.

^I got this information from a Northwestern transfer admissions director so take it for what it’s worth.

Nothing? It’s under the Transfer section, not the UC Sub Forum

I agree with you @ChicagoBears1. The OP wants to apply to Penn and their CAS admit rate is way higher compared to Wharton’s who only admits ~20 Sophomores and even less Juniors.

Thank you all guys!

Sorry for the confussion caused here. I am actually asking about the major I should declare at the school I want to transfer to. I think it will make a difference between a popular major and an unpopular one, right?

@ChicagoBears1
If I am aiming the CAS, would different majors make a difference?

Can anyone answer the question posted above? Thank you~

No, different majors will not make a difference. Different colleges will.

Thank you Knights09

Can anyone else answer the questions in post 9?

= = I bring this up again. Anyone else please?

No. Majors will not make a difference within the same school. There are not a limited number of “spaces” for a less popular major vs. a very common one. Choose whatever major you like. The competitiveness of the school will factor in, not the major.

Thanks, Brishe!
