On my previous thread I mentioned that I wanted to triple major in math/econ/phil, but further contemplation has gotten me second guessing myself.

My questions are:

-Is it possible to change your major, or declare another major, after you transfer?

-Does your declared major affect your admission? As for my case, would it make a tremendous difference if I declare my majors in philosophy/math instead of econ/math?

From what I've heard, and I may be wrong, your choice of majors does make a difference in some schools. Example being UCLA, their film school admits less than 10% of transfers while their school of engineering admits over 40%. If you ask most colleges, they'll tell you that you shouldn't change your major based on admission rates because your best shot at admission lies with your best major, but if you research the actual statistics, there are big differences in admit rates. And as long as you're applying as either a freshman or sophomore transfer, declaring different majors shouldn't be a problem.

Changing majors after admission typically wouldn't be a problem, but would be at schools with "impacted" majors (whether they use that exact term or not). Hard, if not impossible, to move into them.

Same goes for admissions - some majors not open or limited. If that is not the case, your declared major may or may not affect your chances, I would say. Depending on whether it all fits together in telling your "story," on whether they need folks to major in your planned field, etc.

Okay so your declared major does affect your admission. Then would declaring a double or triple major put me at a disadvantage, especially with economics being one of them? Because from my understanding, economics is an impacted major at most schools. Would it be better for me to just declare a major in mathematics and/or philosophy, and additionally declare a major in economics once I transfer?

Actually, I'm in a similar situation, I'm gonna apply as a transfer to USC next year and try to double major in film and political science. What I'm probably gonna do is apply first to the CALS simply because it's way easier to get into than the School of Cinematic Arts. If I get in, then I'll apply to the SCA the following year and double major. That way at least I give myself a better chance of getting into USC, double major comes as second priority.

That's just me though, you may want to do some research into the specific departments of the university you're applying for.

Depends too much on the school, imo, for us to give you an answer here.

I suggest you either name the schools here in a thread title, so posters who know the school(s) can respond or post on the individual school's forum. Also, I think you would be wise to ask the Transfer Admissions counselors at the given schools.
