transfer students @ UCLA...when you get accepted,

when you get accepted, are you already "in" the major you applied for, or do you need to apply for it once you get accepted to the university? because a counselor told me you need to get a certain amount of units at UCLA first before you can apply to the major you want. I don't know what to think...please help, thanks!

depends on the major. Some majors you are automatically in the major, other majors you are pre major.

I emailed someone from the ucla comm. department and they wrote me back with this:

"I am happy to hear that you are interested in the CS major at UCLA. Admission to the Comm. Studies major is by application only. As a regularly-enrolled UCLA student beginning in Fall 2009, you may apply to the major during the Fall application period: Oct. 15-Dec. 15, 2010. At this time, you must have completed 45 letter graded UCLA units."

I'm even more confused now. She keeps referring to me as a transfer student, so I know that piece of information she gave was for transfers....so does this mean i don't apply for that major until I get accepted to ucla?

When I got accepted, I was already "in" the major. So, it'll most likely be the same for you.

oh please post your stats! what year did you apply?

When I was accepted to UCLA it was in the pre-history major status. I believe it was a pretty short list of majors that you come in as pre-whatever.

Dont freak out.

If you applied, as i did for communications; just wait if you got in or not.
If UCLA asks for anything extra from you, then do it or send whatever they want from you.
But I doubt that there's a pre-communication major. Maybe for History there's a pre, but other than that. I doubt they ask anything from you. Once you get an acceptance, you are probably in.

BUT!!!

I know for a fact that you have to finish ATLEAST 60 units by Spring, prior to transferring, to be considered officially in.

If you didn't apply this past November and considering on applying Fall of 10'.
Take as much pre-reqs before applications, finish up your pre-reqs with A's, and do some E.Cs related to communications.

UCLA is crazy competitive. Do whatever you can!!!
Not to be discouraging.
You are going against 800 applicants and only 13% of those applicants are accepted.

It seems that letter you received was referring to a "regularly attended UCLA student."
I know that future comm majors at UCLA apply to the comm department during a separate time than the transfer kids. Also 45 units at UCLA are totally different. The units at LA are "quarter" units. So clearly, this letter was referring to UCLA students...

Best,
Wafflesmasher.

that is so odd! in later parts of the email she would refer to me as a transfer student...but the info she gave says otherwise.

=(

as a transfer student it really doesnt matter that much.

Once you are accepted if you have certain requirements you need to fulfill prior to officially declaring your major your do those requirements and you declare, you dont have to compete for admission into that major again .

For communications especially once your application is reviewed for admission it is also reviewed by the communications department so if you are accepted you are accepted into the comm major, even if you still have to file additional paperwork once at ucla, it will just be a formality and you will already be approved for the major.

for poli sci majors, transfers go in as PRE- poli sci majors and we have to take ps30 class to see if we get in or not

so if i don't get into the communications major, could i switch into it? i know its impacted, but i already have all my pre-reqs for communications done.
