My freshman year at my current college went horribly and I ended up with a 2.4 GPA. I was just generally unhappy there and it wasn't the right fit in any way. After a lot of research and thinking i found a number of DC schools that I desperately want to get into, American University being my top choice.

My highschool GPA was good at a 3.5 and I did a lot of volunteer and club work as well as AP classes.

I plan to drop out of my current college to take time off to work and volunteer and go to school part time. Will this plan work? If I take say, 3-4 classes at my local college with all As, volunteer for my city (with a focus on the political side), and explain that I'm also working will this be attractive to colleges and make up for my awful first year? I also did a business internship for this summer that I can add to my resume.

Any advice? Please!
