Transfer to American University

I'm a student at a CT college and am sorely disappointed in the lack of depth in and small size of the political science department here. What would be my chances of getting into American University with these stats:

Credit Hours: 39 (waives SAT req)
Honors Program: Yes
GPA: 3.5
Major GPA: 4.0
AA Student
ECs:
-Student Government 3 years consistently
-Government and Law Society 3 years consistently
-Started and still run College Democrats chapter on campus from Fall 2008-
-State College Democrats

Internships/Work Experience:
-Intern in State Congress
-Intern in State Attorney General Bldg
-Intern in US Congress
-Intern at State Treasurer

Volunteer Work:
-Obama campaign
-State congressional campaign
-State House campaign
-Campus and Community Voter Registration

Recommendations/thoughts?

Bump. I know this is aggravating, but I just want to get an idea of whether i have a chance before I go forward! Any comments would be helpful!

I reckon you’d have a v.good shot at many universities.
But it really depends what colleges you’re looking at.
But your ECs are very consistent and rings true with what you’re studying.

You shouldn’t have any trouble getting into AU

I would encourage you to also look at George Washington University. It has a fabulous array of opportunities for someone of your strengths and interests. Consider both Political Science and the programs offered through the Elliott School of International Affairs.

you have really great odds! given that you should go someplace a shade better.
If you wrote an amazing essay connecting what you felt doing all those activiteis, that highlights your passion for politics, it would seal the deal on your end.

Like where? My monetary options are limited ($48,000≤). Aside from that, my SAT (cumulative) is only 1850. Alone, I only have about a 1600/2400 as my average SAT score. I couldn’t go to GTown, and GW is WAY too expensive. I’m keen on going to a DC school, and I know I won’t get into the Ivy League. Where else can I find a large Political Science department with lots of political opportunities? American is probably best for me, unless someone can tell me differently. ˘¯(O_o)/¯˘

If I recall correctly GW’s tuition is fixed for all four years. Also, GW might have better financial aid than American.

The problem is that my family cant’ afford 55,600 dollars a year. I’ll ask around though.

You have really good chances of getting in. My advice to you is apply for the spring semester (Nov. 1) you will get tons of Financial Aid (grants - don’t need to pay back) because that is how their financial aid system works. I would highly encourage you to apply in the spring, it can’t hurt trust me…

Also look into George Mason University as well as University of Virginia. Both are great schools for political science.

Obviously American University is great however, I would also go for a visit before enrolling. Definitely apply that won’t hurt.

You have good stats so I would also try Georgetown, GW (see how much money they throw at you - again apply in the spring) and obviously apply early for American.

Though, American University and GW are completely different in their atmosphere. If you like more of a campus feel then go to American because it is actually a campus as opposed to GW in which you are just blended in with the city. I live in the DC area and yes I have been to both schools myself.

I go to a community college and I got accepted for Fall 2009. Though, I waited so that I could apply for Spring 2010 because they will throw more money at me (15K more)…

Hope this helps. Send me a Private message if you want more info or insight.

Moltenlava

Hmm…well I would apply to GTown, except for the fact that my SATs are **** (like 1600 average, about 1850 cumulative, and I don’t even want to talk about my SAT IIs…shudder). I don’t think I’d have a chance anywhere good that looks at SAT scores with those stats…would I? I really have no idea.

AU is a fantastic school!! go for it!!

shameless bump! Also I’m having trouble on my essay—where do I go to get input? I know there’s a college essays section, but is there a specific subforum for transfers?
