Transfer to Colorado School of Mines, any chance?

Hello,

I am a current community college student. I am working towards transferring to a four year school in order to major in Petroleum Engineering. At this point I have guaranteed admission to Texas Tech and Montana Tech. Yet, there is nothing more that I would like, than to attend Mines. However, I am not sure if I am a viable candidate for Mines. I did very poorly in HS, it's a long story. The jist of it being that I ended up with a 2.5 weighted GPA.

Well, like I said, I am currently attending CC trying to dig myself out of this hole. After two semesters (summer + fall) in the books, my GPA is, 3.6. So far I have taken Calc I/II, Chem I/II, University Physics I, Eng 101, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics. This semester I am taking Calc III, University Physics II, Intro to Geology, and English 102. 2280 SAT. I’m not sure how important 'hooks' are to Mines, but I am a first generation American and the first in the family to attend college.

So with this said, should I even bother applying? I recently read through 'Fiske Guide to Colleges' where it noted that Mines is a, 'easy to get into' school, with a acceptance rate of 66%. Yet everything I have found online suggest the exact opposite. I just wanted to get an outside opinion/advice.

Thanks!

I think the Fiske info is a bit outdated/misleading in this case - their acceptance rate is currently 45%, and I think even that is a bit misleading because, in general, students applying to Mines tend to be very strong students, especially in the area of math and science. 86% of those admitted had unwieghted GPA’s above 3.5, with SAT Math between 630 and 710. All that said, don’t give up! It sounds like you’ve done well in CC the past 2 semesters and your SAT is very strong. If you really want to attend, arrange a visit and meet with an admissions counselor. Mines is small enough that they will take the time to get to know you and your situation. If you can’t visit - at least call and talk to admissions and see what they say. Good luck - I hope things work out for you!

Hi, I’m in a similar conundrum as the one you wrote about. Can you tell me how your transfer experience went? Thank you!
