Transfer to CPP for Double Major in Math

My son is a senior at a school out of state, majoring in Comp Sci. He is thinking of finishing his Comp Sci major there, then moving back home to So Cal, and attending a local school, probably Cal Poly, for a year to get a Math major (he only needs about a year’s worth of math classes to qualify for a math major).

Is this a feasible plan? Would Cal Poly grant him a math degree when he is only taking one year’s worth of classes there? Would he have trouble getting the classes he needs within a year?

Any information would be appreciated. This specific situation doesn’t seem to be addressed on the CPP website.

So he is interested in getting a 2nd Bachelors degree in Math? Why not just go for a Masters since many of the OOS courses may not transfer to CPP and it could take him longer than a year. Do not see why a 2nd BS in Math would benefit him.

If he wants to double major, that should be done at his current school.

The problem is that he has a full-ride scholarship that expires this year. If he stays there for another year it will cost probably $20,000 more than living at home and attending Cal Poly. I don’t want to get into the reasons why he wants to double major, that’s not what I’m here to discuss. I’m just trying to find out how feasible it would be to do it this way. Thanks.

He cannot double major after he graduates from the OOS school. He will be going back for a 2nd Bachelors at CPP or he should consider a Masters. It will not be a transfer. He will start as a new student for his 2nd BS or Masters.

Thanks for that information. I’m a little confused though. You say he will start as a new student, but you’re not saying he would have to take GE classes, etc., all over again are you? Like he would get no credit for completed coursework at all?

He would have to check with CPP on which courses from the OOS school could be used towards his 2nd BS. If he is considering pursuing a Masters instead, then he would probably need to take the GRE before applying. Again, the best thing he could do is contact CPP admissions directly and get the most up to date information.

Graduate and Postbaccalaureate Application Procedures

All graduate and post-baccalaureate applicants (e.g., Ed.D., joint Ph.D. applicants, master’s degree applicants, those seeking educational credentials or certificates, and where permitted, holders of baccalaureate degrees interested in taking courses for personal or professional growth) must file a complete graduate application as described in the graduate and post-baccalaureate admission materials at www.csumentor.edu.

Applicants seeking a second bachelor’s degree should submit the undergraduate application for admission unless specifically requested to do otherwise. Applicants who completed undergraduate degree requirements and graduated the preceding term are also required to complete and submit an application and the $55 nonrefundable application fee. Since applicants for post-baccalaureate programs may be limited to the choice of a single campus on each application, re-routing to alternate campuses or later changes of campus choice are not guaranteed. To be assured of initial consideration by more than one campus, it is necessary to submit separate applications (including fees) to each. Applications submitted by way of www.csumentor.edu are expected unless submission of an electronic application is impossible. An electronic version of the CSU graduate application is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.csumentor.edu. For further information regarding graduate and postbaccalaureate admission, please see http://dsa.csupomona.edu/admissions/default.asp.
