Hello,
TR;DR Here is my problem. I am currently a first year student at university of alberta( i know ) and want to transfer to either UCLA or UCB. However, I am not taking an English course atm, should I sign up for one immediately?

And here is my background,

I initially applied for UCLA and UCB in my senior year. I was rejected to both because of low SAT score, around 2050, mainly because in Canada, I wasn't taught the materials in both the Reading and Writing section in school, and maintained a 2k+ score only due to a relatively high math score. Also, I wasn't enrolled in IB or AP programs in my school, as a result, I had to self study the extra materials in both Physics and Math SAT2s (canadian educational system is behind a step) which I also didn't do so well either (720 phy and 680 math 2).

I am very confident in my Chem, Math and Physics ability and can confidently say that I am above average among my peers, but I do admit my English skills is quite lacking.
As a result, I didn't not any english courses in my first year of university.
If I were to maintain a GPA of 3.9-4.0 among my courses WITHOUT english, would I be legible to apply for transfer to UCB or UCLA, or must I take english courses?

Thanks for your help!

Both UC’s require English courses for general education. You really should email both colleges>

I’d recommend taking an English course by the end of this year if you are planning to apply for transfer. It is a basic requirement for transfers from California Community Colleges but I suspect they would like to see at least one English course from all applicants. However, if taking English is going to be a serious problem for you, I wouldn’t do it just for the sake of transferring. I don’t know about Berkeley, but transfer applicants from outside the U.S to UCLA have the lowest acceptance rate (usually <5%), mostly because of priority/articulation issues. Here’s a sample of the stats:

[Profile of Transfers from Intl Schls - 12 Fall - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof12_intl.htm)

So IMO, if it would give you overwhelming pressure to take English in your first year of college, I wouldn’t do it just for applying to the UCs.

I was wondering if you know if i’m able to transfer after the second year?
sorry >_<

I don’t know. You have email those UCs

Transferring as a sophmore is very difficult, especially without English. You should give it a shot, but you will have a much better chance as a junior. Also I would give UCSD and UCSB a try as well, because they are good schools too but not as competitive as UCLA and Cal.
