Transfer to Moody College of Communication

I’m an undergraduate at an in-state community college and wanting to transfer to UT for RTF (Radio/Televion/Film) as my first choice.

I’m not transferring this year but plan to within the next two years. I’m working on bringing my GPA up more and getting in more extracurricular/volunteer work in. I haven’t seen too much posted about this specific college, or much of anyone posting about RTF. I currently only have 1 extracurricular activity from high school and another ongoing volunteer work that is actually related to my first choice major. I have other volunteer work done, although it’s not related to my first choice major.

I started out in college doing very poorly (due to mental health issues) but have turned it around very dramatically.

I was interested if anyone going into that major as their first choice, or perhaps the Moody College, or even transferring to UT in general, had any advice as to what my next year or two, planning to transfer to UT for that, should look like? I’ve been reading up on the admissions for a few months and I know they require a resume, essay, and LOR, high GPA, etc.

Thank you.

@PhiloPray‌ I just applied to RTF as a Fall 2015 transfer so I should be able to help you out!

RTF is probably the most competitive major at Moody though I haven’t seen a lot of people post about it recently.

My GPA is sitting at a 3.61 with 51 hours complete according to UT. I’m honestly a bit worried because I haven’t seen anyone in the last couple years get in with below a 3.7 into RTF…BUT UT does holistic admissions meaning they look at everything you submit and consider you carefully. I personally have shot multiple films and have had them play at festivals. I’m in RTF for the artistic aspect and hoping my experience shines in the app and they consider me!

I personally would work on getting your GPA as high as possible! Above a 3.7 I would start to feel safer. Also start doing film related things as UT wants people who are serious about their major. RTF is an extremely competitive field and passion is a must! Make sure your essays are also polished as well because Moody really takes those into consideration.

I’ve heard Moody is more holistic compared to other schools such as Business or Engineering which are basically GPA cutoffs.

I hope this helped in someway and please feel free to message me!

Thank you, that’s a lot of good advice. I appreciate your response!

I did read on their website that their enrollment into Moody is limited. I don’t know my GPA standing as of right now because I transferred from one community college to another, so I only see my GPA from my current school. I’m not sure how they factor in the GPA from the other school. I definitely need to get my extracurriculars up. Also, I suppose pick out a second choice major, as I know they ask for that, too.

Do you know anything about if UT accepts students into their second choice major, if they don’t qualify for their first choice? I just have a lot more volunteer work that doesn’t match up with my first choice major. I did this volunteer work out of passion for something personal, and it doesn’t quite match up with any major I want a degree in.

I do have a backup school that I plan to apply to if I don’t get accepted. I live in north texas, north of Dallas, so UNT would be a backup. They offer the same program (RTF), but it’s not my first choice school.

A little more info about me, I have a had a great passion for filmmaking since I was a teen. Although, i’ve had a lot other issues in my life that stirred other passions. I’ve been back and forth in choosing a major because I have a lot of interests. My interests vary. I’m not even sure what kind of career I would want to be doing after college, not even sure of a dream career. I’ve done volunteer work that coincides with a health care/public relations field, out of personal reasons. Although, that is not particularly a field I want a degree in…well in health care, per se.

UT will take all classes from every college you have attended to create your transfer GPA. They combine the grades of passing and failed classes to create your cumulative GPA. They will also list which classes will transfer. If you repeat a course they will average both grades together of the repeat and the first attempt. They are pretty harsh when it comes to transfer GPA compared to most schools but it just factors into their competitiveness overall.

As for your second choice, pick COLA Undeclared. That is a safe bet if you just want into the university itself BUT for that you’re going to need around a 3.5 transfer GPA. You could try to internally transfer into RTF once at UT.

Also remember there is no golden GPA per se. There was a guy on here who transferred into COLA this current spring semester with a 3.3. Anything is possible. 3.3 is the lowest I have ever seen here on college confidential for UT though.

If you have anymore questions please ask!
