I currently attend UCI and want to transfer to NYU as either and econ or math major, the problem is i will have about 100 credits( I changed my major and a good portion of the credits will not cover any requirements for my new major). Will this hurt my application? I assuming that econ is a pretty popular major, would this being down my chances of being accepted?

When you apply, the could careless about what major you list - just what internal school you are transferring to. You may have to stay longer or have longer days to make up requirements for those credits though

That's not true, your major does matter. While for freshman admission to CAS and Stern, your major doesn't matter, things are a little different when transferring. One of the things NYU considers is your reason for transferring, that is, why NYU and not your current school? The better the reason you have for transferring (e.g. maybe NYU has a unique department in what you're interested in), the better your chance of getting in. Also, transfer admission is always based on the space they have available, so if your department is overcrowded, that may make it more difficult to get in since they simply don't need more people.

jwblue is right. you have to declare a major to transfer.

point taken

so would it be better to choose a major that isnt as popular and change my major to what i desire? I would be interested in applying to CAS, what would you say my chances are if my GPA is about 3.5-3.6?

Just put down what you really want to major in.

Admissions isn't stupid, if you put down you want to major in something obscure like medieval studies, but nothing in your record indicates you have an interest in the subject and all your classes are in math or econ, I'm pretty sure they'll figure it out.
