Transfer to Rice

I did not apply to Rice for my freshman year but am thinking about transferring to Rice starting next year. I have never done one of these kinds of thread before so please tell me if there is anything else I should add to help you guys better chance me. Also, since I will have only done 1 semester of college when I apply, I assume that Rice will still look heavily at my high school stats. So those are the ones that I am putting down here.

Major: Biomedical Engineering (Bioengineering for Rice)

Rank/GPA: 16/829, 5.35/6.0 (schools GPA scale), 4.0 unweighted

ACT: 32, 33 Math 36 Science 30 English 29 Reading (Would Rice see that I am going for engineering and that my math and science score are pretty high)
SAT II: 800 USH 790 Math II

AP Scores: AP World History: 5
AP US History: 5
AP English III: 5
AP English IV: 4
AP Chemistry: 4
AP Calculus AB: 5
AP Government: 5

Going to try to keep this short
ECs: Debate Team (Quallified for state tournament 2 in 3 years, quallified for national tournament, VP of Tournaments and Novice Coordinator)
Academic Decathlon (5th in regional, 23rd in state)
National Honor Society (Liaison for an organization)
National Science Honor Society (Vice President)

Science Related Works: Internship with Doctor for an year, UTMB Summer Science Program, National Youth Leadership Forum in Medicine, NASA STEM Program, NASA INSPIRE Program

I have some volunteer stuff, but choose not to list that. Obviously how I do at my current university in biomedical engineering will play a big role. Also, I am going to be doing research in a lab during my first year, if that makes a difference. Any feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks.

hey guys, any kind of insight will be much appreciated.

Honestly it is way too early to compare you against anyone. But comparing really won’t make a difference since there is no resume that will automatically get you into Rice. Your stats and activities look fine. I would highly recommend not worrying about transferring until at least your second semester. Give your current school your undivided attention, and if you still think that you are missing out, then come January, start filling out your application.

Thanks for info. I am definitely going to spend my 1st year at my current university. I was just looking into Rice because my parents want me closer to home. Once again thanks.

Here’s my stats, i’m a sophomore at a regional university in OK.
High School:
GPA-3.68, freshman and sophomore year’s were not so great, approx. 3.0 and 3.4, then uphill from there. Junior year was a 4.0, and senior was around a 3.9.
ACT-31 Math was 34, Science-33, Reading-31, English-28
College:
GPA-3.95 All A’s in classes including Chem1 & 2, Organic chem 1 & 2, Calculus 2, Bio 1, Cell Bio, History, Gov, Health, and a B in Into to Engineering (which is no longer my major). I am currently taking and expect A’s in Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physics 1, and Microbiology.
EC’s- I’ve been doing ovarian cancer research, on a drug currently in clinical trials, at my university for about 6 months now. I expect to go to a national cancer research conference in DC to present a poster in april. The research involves down regulation through phosporylation of Cyclin D1 inducing G1 cell cycle arrest. I also volunteered 7 hours a week at OK Heart Hospital for about 5 months.

My main concern in writing the 2-3 page essay over what diversity you would bring to Rice… Anyways, what do you guys think my chances of getting in percentage wise, apparently it was ~20% overall last year.

Hey wcarroway! I recognize your CC name; I think you posted in the 2012 transfer thread last year. I just transferred to Rice this year, and I see the reasons for your concern. I wouldn’t worry too much about your high school courses; college is what will really matter for you at this point. The contribution essay for Rice was definitely the hardest yet most rewarding essay I have ever written, and it is not something that happened in one night. The idea was not forced, and just came to me at some point and I started writing. I think that some college essays have to be inspired, and this is definitely one of them. Not sure if that’s the answer you wanted, but there you have it.

Yeah, I remember you, I didn’t end up submitting my application last year. Glad to hear that you got in though! How are you liking rice so far?

Rice is awesome. I honesty can’t believe it’s been three months. I’ve been so busy with classes, activities, and everything that time just flew by.
