Hi, my uc admissions have not been going so well, and I’m considering the transfer route from CC to a UC. I have heard about people only spending one year at a CC and then transferring to a UC and being counted as a junior, even though its technically their second year in college. I did some research, and I found out that the minimum to transfer is to have 60 credits, complete the igetc for the cc, and complete and required courses for that specific major that one is applying for. I will be coming in with a lot of AP credits, and I was wondering if you could answer this question. So i will have passed the following ap exams with a 3 or better by the time i graduate high school: Calc BC, Biology, Environmental Science, Art History, Computer Science, US Government and politics, macroeconomics, statistics, human geography, psychology. I was looking at the cc’s ap credit page on the college board website and I calculated that I would have already accumulated 37 units. Would that mean that I would only need 23 more units to pass the minimum of transferring to a UC?

Sort of. Do you have any idea of what you’d be interested in studying?
Computer science, and i was looking at assist.org and i was looking at the requirments to transfer to uci for cs, and you have take two required math classes, and there is a long list of suggested classes

i have also taken a us history class at my local community college in my junior year of high school
Yes, you can technically apply. However, you will likely be missing significant major preparation for your major. If it’s listed on Assist as recommended (and CS has many, many of them), it means that the universities will really want to see it when they review your application. In fact, major preparation is #2 right behind GPA for the UCs.
tl;dr You won’t be competitive without finishing more major preparation. Most CS majors are expected to finish Calculus 4 (Linear Algebra) prior to transfer.
It will be extremely difficult to transfer as a CS major in one year, but perhaps it can be done. I’ll defer to @napapapa , @blsUCtransfer, and @lenocturne (all of whom I believe are CS majors?)
If you were majoring in something like Political Science, transferring in 1 year would probably be rather easy. As for CS, though, it doesn’t appear to be feasible. You have to take a ton of classes for CS - so, it’s really better to take a second year.
CS majors can give you better insight than I can - but essentially, you really need as many of those recommended classes as possible to be considered. Even if you got a 4.0, they won’t accept you anywhere with only 2 math classes completed - you need to take tons of technical courses.
What grade did you get in the History class?
Well, I’ll be able to get out of those two math classes already because of calc bc ap exam, so I can take a lot of those recommended classes my first year of summer, fall, spring semester
I would recommend spending the time.
Prepare for a second major. Save money. There are a TON of jobs, internships, etc, for computer science majors and tech enthusiasts.
Powering through college sounds great until you actually start attending college. We are all terrified by how quickly these years pass. When I was in your shoes, I was also trying to see how I could take the fastest route, but, the times have definitely changed. Because of my future plans, I actually could not schedule anything past four years even if I wanted to, but I personally envy people who take another semester/year. Graduating high school is amazing. Graduating college far more stress that you would imagine. Especially in this economy.
If I’m not wrong, but if i were to successfully transfer in one year, wouldn’t I be a junior at a UC, and basically skip my 2nd year at college? @TheVisionary @goldencub
Not a CS major, but IMHO @TheVisionary is completely right.
I was a one year transfer (APs and dual CC/HS enrollment) and while I am lucky in that I have employment lined up for this summer (and hopefully beyond after graduation), I am completely envious of how other students get to spend more time at the UCs as an undergrad. All the UCs have a term / unit cap, and some like Cal and UCLA are extremely strict, so while you do essentially “skip” a year, it’s not the same as skipping a grade in grade school. Rather…it’s more akin to your personal countdown to being pushed into the “real” world starting earlier than it needs to be. A lot of one year transfers like myself will echo the sentiment that you’ll want that extra year to get experience, grow as an individual, and build up skills needed to stand out at the UCs. (Especially in a field like CS where everyone has the same baseline skills)
goldencub and the others are right.
Definitely would not recommend trying to power through so quickly a major like CS, I’m sure UCI isn’t the only school you’ll be applying to either once the time comes, there are many other UCs that seem to offer a decent CS curriculum.
I would assume that AP Computer Science only covers your intro course, you’ll still have OOP - Data Structures - Assembly to go… enjoy the journey man don’t try to rush through it so much lol. As TheVisionary said there are many opportunities in CS… many internships/research positions you can get yourself into when the time is right. Nothing is running away from you, and don’t feel discouraged at any point.
