Transfer to Wharton or stay at UVA?

Hey guys, so I was admitted to Wharton as a transfer student and I'm deciding between transferring there or staying at UVA. I really like UVA and plan on going to the McIntire School of Commerce, but then again Wharton is Wharton and there's a lot of opportunity there. What do you guys think? Thanks!

You do realize that most(all?) of your classmates would switch if given the chance? Forget the bs opinion-based rankings in magazines. Wharton is king.

Moreover, you still have to apply to UVA’s business school if you stay.

I doubt you will have a problem getting into McEntire if you apply, and honestly, if you really like UVA, I don’t see why you should switch. However, Wharton is indeed king, so keep that in mind of course.

If you’re instate at UVA the cost difference might be worth noting. However, if costs are the same, Wharton will get you a little farther right out of college.

What led you to apply as a transfer? Are you dissatisfied with UVA, or just never lost interest in Wharton?

Wharton is “more prestigious,” but either school offers a top-notch education.

There really isn’t much of a question. Go to Wharton.

If I had the choice, and the cost difference wasn’t more than $40,000-$50,000/total, I’d pick Wharton. That said, I think you should flip a coin. Figure which one you were rooting for. I’d also caution not to pick solely for Wharton’s name…if you think you will hate the Wharton/Penn experience, and that you will terribly miss UVA, stay at UVA. It’s not like you’re at a community college! Both options are great, and I wish you luck with your decision

Uhh you applied, right? Means you can’t be all that in love with UVA.

So Wharton, duh :stuck_out_tongue: Or you can give me your spot! >:O

i pretty much had to make the same decision last year as a senior in hs, before applying to wharton ED (im in state for UVA).

i ended up picking wharton and am a freshman now. the cost difference is HUGE (probly like 30K or more a year), and i think at this level, the decision should be based on 2 things: 1) fit, and 2) whether paying that extra amount is going to be a burden to your family.

if you’re happy at uva, you might find penn very different because of the city setting. a lot of my friends at uva are really happy about their decision tho, so it’s really about your fit.

yes, wharton may offer you some more opportunities upon graduation. but if that extra amount of money is going to put a strain on you/your family for years after, i don’t think it’s worth it. UVA is still a good school, and i can’t see someone who works pretty hard at either school ending up homeless upon graduation haha

I applied for transfer because I wanted to go there out of high school and thought Wharton would open many more doors for me, and honestly I didn’t think I was going to get in as a transfer. Now that I actually got in I’m leaning towards the Wharton side because although I like UVA now, down the road I think Wharton will give me more options and need to decide soon. Also, I’m actually out of state, so going to Wharton would be a few thousand cheaper.

Do you guys feel that it would be better to be a little above average at Wharton or be at the top at UVA? I also heard that if I go to Wharton, chances are I don’t even need an MBA, is that true?

Given that UPenn is cheaper for you than out of state UVA, you should probably go to Penn. If you are interested in business, you will not get a better corporate finance training anywhere in the country. Other departments in Wharton like marketing and mangement are excellent. The recruitment picture is a lot gloomier these days than a few years ago but hopefully that will improve by the time you graduate.

Top banks and hedge funds target UVA also but in terms of placements as a percentage of students who apply, Wharton undergrad is likely to be tops in the country, edging out Harvard and Princeton.

For what it’s worth, UPenn is the #1 school for Goldman Sachs new hires, followed by Columbia.

Also, with facebook, IM etc. it is a lot easier these days to stay in touch with the friends you’ve made at UVA freshman year.
