I've been accepted both to Wharton and UVA and am clueless about what school to choose!

Wharton has undisputably remarkable reputation (along with entire Penn), but McIntire at UVA seems to be amazing too (having just taken over the top spot from Wharton in BusinessWeek's ranking of undergrad business schools).

I think it’s less about ranking and more about what school “fits” you. I recommend visiting both (Days on the Lawn for UVA) and then making your decision from there. Because like you said, they’re both great schools, and you’ll do fine at either one.

my mom went to wharton and it was perfect for her. but then she went to work at mobil after nyu-stern grad school and once the company moved from ny to dc she told me she hired exclusively uva (specifically darden, so not exactly mcintire but same idea) grads over places like harvard. so if you’re looking to work in the dc area (even though it’s undergrad vs grad) then you might want to go to uva.

on the other hand, you have to apply for admittance to the commerce school (middle of your 4th semester) so if you’re already accepted to wharton then you might want to go there if you think you might not make the grades at uva to get you in after your first 2 years.

fit is also definitely important - penn is in the middle of the city, while uva is in a college town. they’re both approx the same size, though penn has more grad students i think. also uva’s atmosphere is completely different. i think either school could get you where you need to go so if one seems more “you” then you should definitely weight that the most heavily in your decision.

UVA’s McIntire just beat Wharton and now it is ranked the #1 business school for undergrad (by Business Week)…however, I think if I had the money I would choose Penn, but then again, UVA is an amazing school and for its price, it’s truly a bargain.

i think the businessweek rankings for undergrad business programs are a fluke- i’d definitely choose wharton over uva. upenn is a lot more well known than uva and the fact that it’s an ivy definitely boosts up its points.

I echo hazel’s post, you really should look at what else the schools offer and see which one suits you better. Go on visits, stay overnight if you can.

Well I’d say keep in mind that you may not get into McIntire because you have to reapply, but at Wharton you’d definitely get to do business. Are you in-state for UVA/paying ~the same at both schools? If not then think whether the added costs at one is worth that price. Also consider whether you like a big city (Philly) or small city (C’ville). Since the two schools are reasonably close to each other I think it would make good sense to visit both and then choose.

Soccerrocks: I’d go for the full ride especially if UVA is OOS. Virginia is an awesome school but honestly IMO not worth the OOS price tag in comparison to a free ride at UNC, especially if you’re planning on grad school which is very very expensive so it makes more sense to “save” the money for then. It depends on whether UVA is worth the money for you (and family), I guess.
