How does the application process work? When do we apply? Do we get a choice, or is it all randomized?

If we do get a choice, where do you recommend for an incoming sophomore looking for a single but near all the activity?

This year there were no sophomore singles available–doubles only. The only way to get a single at this point is if someone has given up their room for Fall due to transfer, study abroad, etc. You will receive a notice to sign up for housing, and they will give you some preferences for locations (the housing website does a nice job explaining your options). However, as a transfer, you will most likely room with another transfer in what ever housing is available post the completed housing lottery.

Joy. We get last pick. Oh well c’est la vie.

The housing lottery is long and involved, lasting a couple of months for various options for upperclass students. Options are in waves, and you can try for various options and see how the lottery turns out. The lottery was completed in April, however, so before you even were aware you were admitted to Vanderbilt. You may actually get great housing–as people make decisions to study abroad, etc, it leaves some good options available.

Next year you will have the same options as everyone else.

Its not really random - there are dorms where blocks are left for the 200+ transfers, and they are good dorms. You don’t get to request a particular dorm as a transfer - you’re just assigned it. Your roommate/s are usually transfers too.
