Transfer vs. Whitney App

Hi, I'm a 26 year old sophmore at a cc. I have a 4.0 and a 29 ACT composite with a 35in Reading, and am prepping to take the SAT II in Math and Chemistry. Scholar's Program student recently inducted into Phi Theta Kappa where I hold office.

I have a very compelling story for my early hs windfall, and then my rise Junior year and 1st half of senior year. Then a family tragedy ripped away my dreams, and I was left alone and destitute (no joke, seriously homeless), and left to find surviving family in Europe. I lived in Europe for 6 years, and while the surviving family members didn't want me at first... getting to know me and my moral character they have accepted me and given me my first feelings of a traditional family environment. After, years of struggling I came back to school with a vengence, and will earn a HS Diploma from a local HS in Dec, and 2 Associate's in May (Science/Pre-Med, and Arts/Eng Rht).

Locally, I have been working with Phi Theta Kappa in organizing several large events... fundraising for a local homeless organization, working in a homeless shelter, and organizing a major symposium. I also help with several other organizations including the American Red Cross, and The American Cancer Society (several other cancer societies as well). Currently, I am enrolled in 10 classes for 31 credit hours this semester... and stand to graduate Summa Cum Laude.

I originally posted in the What are my chances forum where a "mom" whose children are not even at Yale, and obviously has no personal information regarding the EWSP called me mediocre. I'm sorry I fail to acceptthe label of "mediocre".

So what do Whitney Students think my chances are? Should I also apply as a transfer?

I’m a HS senior and have no idea how you guys are meant to apply to the Whitney prog. is or what the criteria are or anything of that sort. But, what I do know is that you are not mediocre. You’re story is so original and compelling and I just think you would get in on that basis. If you have to write a personal statement (which I’m assuming you do) and you express your story half as well as you did here (even though this was just the gist), I think you have an awesome shot of getting in. So I say, go for it. Forget that mom!

vpappas. I am currently a whitney student though I have friends who are transfers here. Your story seems something that might be a better fit in the EWSP but that is really a function of your needs. I can attest to only a few differences. First, you will live off-campus. And second, you can complete your degree part time. You pay per credit rather than a set amount for a semester (no matter how few or many credits you take). You might also appreciate the community of Eli Whitney students more considering they are all older. If you have any other questions - feel free to PM me!
