Hi everyone, I’m an international student who received a GPA of 1.8, and 90+ credits from my previous university (national ranking 50-100). My problem is, due to psychological problems, I didn’t contact my previous university and just left school to work at a local restaurant. I registered for the last semesters’ courses but did not attend classes or take exams. So I ended up with all Fs for the last semester that I actually did not attend. Otherwise my GPA won’t be below 2.0. My previous university can’t provide any letters proving my status because they said that I have to be responsible for my own registrations.
Now I want to find a regional or community college where I can continue my study. However, when I applied as a transfer student, the colleges all said that they needed a minimum GPA of 2.0. I’ve already been turned down by several universities. Can anyone give me some suggestions on which college I should apply for? Does anyone know any successful transfer cases with a GPA below 2.0? As long as I can continue my studies and receive a bachelor’s degree, I’m OK with any college. Any ideas?
Thank you all for your help!
I think you should go to a community college to get your grades up and then apply to transfer. I don’t know anywhere you’d get in with a 1.8 off the top of my head.
Thing is you are an international student, you are obligated to taking 12 units per semester. You could come to the US to study because you had proved you could pay your tuition fee and need not work during your study. Now you are saying that you took classes but did not attend for one whole semester, AND you went to work, which is not allowed. Even if your family encounter extreme financial issues, you have to apply for a working permit, but you also must maintain your 2.0 minimum GPA. Unless you worked legally, and unless the college you went to did not report you to USCIS, for now, you should be worrying about your visa status, and you should consult with an immigration lawyer as soon as possible.
I am sorry if i said something that makes you feel worse, but if there is a problem, you should face the truth and try to solve it. I know everybody is fighting a battle, and I am maybe luckier than you, but there are wrong ways and right ways to fight the battles. In my perspective, you did not choose the right thing to do (skipping school while being an international student), and now things get more serious when it comes to your visa status. I dont know how to help you with this, so you should contact a lawyer for further help.
I am unsure about the legality of your circumstances and if your current situation would possibly jeopardize your visa/stay in the United States. I hope that is not the case; however, I would strongly recommend you consult a lawyer or seek proper legal advice ASAP. This is a very serious issue that needs to be dealt with in a prompt manner.
In terms of transfer, your best bet would be to go to a community college. I do not believe there are many universities that would take someone with a GPA below a 2.0.
Good luck and I hope that everything works out for you.
